Mattress for slatted base bed with 8cm gaps

Claire asked
10th January 2017

I have a slatted base bed (bought from John Lewis a few years ago) with 8cm gaps between slats. A new John Lewis pocket spring mattress has developed soft spots and hard ridges/bumps after only 3 months with use on this base. Will any of your mattresses be more suitable and fare better, and will they still be covered by warranty if I buy one to use with this bed?

Hi Claire,

Thank you for your enquiry.

With a slatted base with the gaps that you refer to between the slats we would always advocate placing some form of barrier, usually thin (3-5mm) MDF, over the slats to provide the mattress with a uniform surface upon which to sit and avoid the occurrence of ridging of the type you refer to.

All of our mattresses can be used on slatted bases providing that the suggested precautions are taken, if you fail to take these precautions, it may invalidate the guarantee.

Before opting to buy a new mattress, it may be worth boarding the base and seeing is this resolves the issues you have at present.

All double sided mattresses should be turned or rotated on a monthly basis for the first twelve months as described in the article here.

If yours is one sided, you will only be able to rotate it, but the application of the boarding should help.

To discuss suitability of mattresses with ourselves we would need to know your body weights, preferred feel and sleeping habits;
