Mattress topper for an open coil mattress?

Pandu asked

Hi,
I just moved in to a new rented flat which is furnished. Last night was my first night there but it is really uncomfortable as the mattress in the main bedroom is using open coil type.
Would you recommend a mattress topper on top of a open coil matress? I reckon the mattres toper will soften the interface between the coil and our body, but will it dampen or eliminate the roll effects alltogether? Or it will be a waste of money and I should opt for buying the springs/” title=”pocket spring”>pocket spring matress instead?
Really looking forward for your input.
Kind regards,
Pandu

Hi Pandu,

It’s a really tricky one when it comes to making a ‘bad bed good’. To some extent, you can tweak a bed but never fundamentally change it if it’s unsuitable. It’s like having the wrong size shoes on and trying to use socks to sort it out!

You certainly could try a topper to see if this helps soften the top layer. It won’t, however, sort out the roll together as you foundation will still be using the spongy open coil. If you imagine your mattress is like the foundation of a building, you need to start off with the correct support because layering other layers on top will all conform to the core and follow suit. So if you roll together now the chances are even with toppers you will still roll together.

It maybe more cost effective to buy a new mattress that’s suitable than spending money on toppers and other layers. If you could let me know your budget I can advise on a suitable mattress or topper. I wouldn’t guarantee with the topper that it would do anything other than provide a more comfortable top comfort layer.

Hope that helps.
