TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Mattress topper options

David asked
5th January 2016

I have a Hypnos Princess mattress which uses a blend of wool, cashmere, silk and cotton for its comfort layers
It is a split tension mattress – one side is firm, the other medium as my partner and I of differing weights (16 stone vs 8.5 stone).
I’ve read somewhere on your website that ideally a mattress topper should be the same or similar to the materials used in the mattress. My questions:
1) Is this true and does this mean buying a latex topper is not ideal? Specifically, a dunlop latex topper 3″ thickness.
2) What would be the ideal fit for this type of mattress?
3) Would the fact that the mattress is split tension cause any problems when buying a topper?
Looking forward to hearing back from you and many thanks for all the useful information on this site.

Hi David,

Thanks for your question.

Personally, I would not have recommended a medium tension mattress for your partner, although I note that this product is only available in medium and firm. I presume the query in respect of the topper is as a result of the mattress not being comfortable for your partner and so the application of a topper is required to provide the comfort needed.

We always advise that, if you have a mattress with natural upholstery layers and there is a requirement to soften the feel with the application of a topper, that topper should be of similar construction in order to mimic the feel of natural upholstery in the mattress. Although it is possible to use a latex topper, but the feel will be completely different to that of the original mattress. I note that on their site it does suggest a goose down topper may be used with the mattress.

Applying a topper to a split tension mattress may cause issues with the feel for both parties and if softening for one, it may become too soft for the other, but it does really depend upon what overall feel is required as it may be that both require a softer feel than is currently being afforded by the mattress.  One other thing to remember is that the description of the upholstery layers in the mattress is vague in the extreme, although the fillings are all natural,  they are not provided in the form of GSM (grams per square metre) making any recommendation or comparison impossible.

I trust that this is of some assistance, but if you require any further advice, please do not hesitate to call our office. 0161 437 4419
