Mattress upholstery weight
First off thank you for this brilliant and insightful website! So we are looking to replace our mattress. We’ve tried some out at dreams and we now know we want medium to firm pocket sprung hand tufted possibly hand stitched 2 sided mattress. Our budget isn’t that big unfortunately, £300. Ive messaged a few companies/ manufacturers to ask for the GSM of the layers/materials used but most are slow getting back to me. My question is one, could i gauge if theres is a decent amount of filling by the overall weight of the mattress? The second being, would less wool filling be preferred over more polyester…so if a mattress had layers of natural material but these layers werent as thick as another mattress that used layers of man made wadding and fibres….would the natural materials although less be equally as comfy?

We are glad that you see the logic in requesting details of the GSM when purchasing a mattress, however, the weight of a mattress can be deceptive in gauging the levels of upholstery in it. The reason for this is that a description may say “wool, mohair, silk and cotton”, but without the GSM you cannot tell how much of each is in it. To comply with the description, only very minimal levels need to be included in the mattress with the weight being made up by other non-specified materials.
We are afraid to say that to obtain a quality mattress with the requirements you have indicated, you should look to spend a great deal more than the £300 budget you have. Basically, you get what you pay for and we would shy away from any mattress without full details in respect of the upholstery. It would be a great surprise if you received any detailed responses in respect of your enquiries with the other manufacturers.
