TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Memory foam disappoints us

Katherine asked

Hello, My partner and I are looking to buy a new mattress. We have tried many over the years and usually have pocket spring with a memory foam top. We both suffer with bad backs. We are usually dissapointed that after a couple of years the dipping is so bad we are in pain each day when waking and hence then have the expense of replacing. We have typically spent between £400 and £750 on mattresses and find no difference in the time it takes to dip. Please could you recommend some products to try and ways to avoid this dipping and hence early replacement. Please note I always rotate the mattress monthly.
Thanks in advance

Hi Katherine,

Dipping to a certain degree will occur in any mattress and there are industry tolerances for this of usually 2-3cm. One factor which could affect this is the base upon which the mattress is placed, particularly if it is of the sprung slatted variety, which tends to have a central support. Where this central support is can either be raised or dipped and this can affect the mattress by causing dipping towards the sides or centre.

I note that you have tried mattresses which are pocket sprung with memory foam tops and I am unsure as to whether you mean that the top internal layer is memory foam or is it what is known as a pillow top. The latter of these is not recommended by us as there is a tendency for the pillow top to fail in the short term resulting in replacement of the mattress.
