Moving from an open coil mattress to a pocket sprung one
Am considering buying your Artisans Natural in Kingsize with a divan. It sounds exactly like what I have been looking for for months. However without being able to try the bed I would really appreciate your advice on the tension.
I am 5ft9″ and weigh 9stone – from reading your site I know your initial response would probably be “Soft”. The added factor though is that for the past 18months I have been sleeping on a cheap open coil mattress on the floor (!!) Yes, shocking I know, but I moved into a new house and wanted to save up for a good mattress. The thing is I don’t find the experience too uncomfortable. Clearly its not particularly great, but am not suffering back ache or anything and sleep soundly all night. Which makes me think I need a firm mattress. Or am I just lucky to have got away with it so far?
I have been trying models in different shops and Medium feels so different on different models, as you well know. I do sometimes find Firm a bit too hard but really dont like the sinking in feeling of “Soft” Should I maybe go for half Medium, half Firm?

Thank you for your enquiry via our website. At your body weight, you are borderline between the soft spring tension and the medium spring tension and would get the correct level of support from either.

I think that for some reason you have been lucky not to find your current sleeping arrangement too firm. It may be that the open coil mattress is particularly soft, but placing it directly on the floor has firmed it up slightly. The models in shops may have been there for some time and been tried by several hundred people, which may have softened the overall feel.
In this instance, however, I would recommend a medium spring tension as this will provide you with a firm support for your body weight and you can, if required, soften the feel with the application of a topper.
