Can a zip & link be joined just from below to minimise movements?

Natalie asked

My partner fidgets pretty badly which keeps us both awake, yet ideally we’d like to share the same bed. Is there a way a zip & link could be joined just from below, so as to minimise us feeling each others movements? My partner is 6’4″ and weighs 12.5 stone. I am 5’8″ and weight 9.4 stone. We are both side sleepers (I do also sleep on my back) We currently have a Sealy Singapore posturepedic (no turn) super king mattress. I think it’s a medium/firm. This suits us fine but it’s going to go in the spare room so we can hopefully sleep in the same bed! Any advice on the right mattress from you guys would be very much welcomed please? The mattress will be going on a sprung slatted base ottoman bed. I’m guesing this won’t be too bad with a zip link since they are already separated in the middle? I haven’t measured the gap between the slats yet.

Hi Natalie

Thanks so much for your question and providing as much info as you can!

A zip and link mattress combined with calico encased pocket springs will minimise the amount of motion transfer you feel from your partner. You pair the spring tension based on your body heights/weights, and at the body heights/weights, you have provided you are a medium spring tension from there you no longer need to concentrate on spring tension.

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

The amount of movement you feel is going to be minimal on this spring tension combined with a zip and link mattress. As you are both currently sleeping on a Posturepedic mattress this would immediately suggest the mattress is a firm in the comfort layer with a medium/firm support level as you have stated. It is quite surprising to hear you have had no aches or pains with you both being predominantly side sleepers as this is in general what happens with side sleepers on a firm comfort layer.

I would advise to go out and try the;

Vispring Devonshire – Soft in upper layers – Comparable with the Artisan Luxury

Vispring Regal Superb – True medium in upper layers – Comparable with Artisan Bespoke 004

Vispring Herald – Firm in the upper layers – Comparable with the Artisan Bespoke

This way then you will be able to develop your preference based on your sleeping habits in the comfort layer as we would not recommend going for a mattress too firm in the comfort layer if you are both side sleepers. From there if you get back to me, I would be able to assist you with much greater ease.

With regards to the Ottoman, this should be absolutely fine although I would check with the manufacturer the weight limits for the struts on the base as the John Ryan By Design Mattresses quite plump! You can sometimes experience the sensation like you are falling into the centre of the mattress, due to sprung slats. This can be avoided by placing a thin layer of MDF/PLY down the centre spine of the Ottoman bed base.

I hope this helps, if you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419
