Natural fibres mattress for a handmade wooden frame

LINDA WOOD asked
19th May 2017

I would like a mattress between medium and firm but not hard, I asked a couple of weeks ago but you recommended a latex foam mattress I used to work in Dunlop in Harrogate and have had several Dunlopillow mattress. I don’t like them as they make me too hot.
I want comfort but not hard but as I have a bad back not a soft mattress, I also have many allergies and need natural filling I think I weight 15.5 stones. If you will to ship to a company called Nomad in Peterborough as I now live in Greece and they will ship for me out here. I would like a king but as I am tall will this be long enough, I am 5ft9″ I have a Super king now from a firm called The Windsor bed company so it was a good mattress, But am fed up with trying to change the zip and link bed as its hard that size when you have a bad back.
What can you recommend please. I have sold many beds and was always told you should spend at least 20 minutes on trying each bed, so am worried about buying over the net in case its too hard or too soft and with living abroad its not as though you can take it back after a week, although I would not want to do that but need to know I am buying the right mattress. I have a handmade frame out of wood so it has slats that are solidly built. Can you help please in recommending a good mattress please.

Hi Linda,

Thanks for your detailed question. We thought you would know everything there is to know if you worked in a bed store in Harrogate! Then again there’s literally thousands of models aren’t there, very confusing at times. Lovely part of Yorkshire Harrogate, beautiful botanical gardens there, any roads we digress, let’s see if we can help you!

Ok at your weight and the feel you’re going for we would recommend you look at the Artisan 1500 as a starting point in a medium spring.

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

It has a firmer feel in the top layer. The medium spring would be ideal given your weight and will support you correctly. A firmer spring maybe too harsh for you and is usually saved for the 16-17 stone plus sleeper. If you’re wanting a 100% natural fibre mattress then the Artisan Bespoke would be a good choice.

Both a king and super king mattress are 6ft 6inches (200cm) in length so you could choose either Linda.

We would ask that you board over your frame to stop the slats from pinching and damaging the mattress. We have a guide here.

Also, slats can sometimes cause dips in the mattress, especially with handmade mattresses like ours that are stuffed with natural fibres. This makes them heavy and so the mattress wants to try and push itself into any large gaps between the slats.

We can deliver to a port of choice here in the UK for you Linda, not a problem.

We just require all the forwarding details that the Greek ports would require to then get the mattress to you.

If you need to use the love it or return it guarantee you would need to get the mattress back to us, unmarked as we can’t offer to collect it from Greece. Hopefully, with the right advice, the mattress will be suitable!

Have a look at the models we’ve recommended and then maybe give us a call or email for more specific questions about them.

All the best Linda and we look forward to hearing from you.
