TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

New mattress equivalent to the John Lewis 6000 spring king size

Mark Porter asked

We have a split tension Harrison 4000 spring bed (firm/medium). Wife is 12 stone and i am 14 stone, but have they damaged right shoulder which occasionally causes me pain and neck ache in my sleep.
I think I need a slightly softer mattress, but do prefer firm to soft, where’s my wife would like medium because of her damaged back (ribs). We’ve tested the John Lewis Harrison 6000 springs in a firm which seem to be soft yet supportive, but were intrigued by your beds.
What would be the equivalent or better in your range with a single tension if possible?

Hi Mark,

Despite your preference, I would not have suggested that you opt for a firm tension for you as you are both in the weight range that would dictate a medium spring tension. The reason that your body weight has a bearing on the spring tension is that if you have a firmer spring than your weight dictates, the springs are not providing the support that is required, the same applies if you go for a softer spring.

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

So, having established that I would recommend a medium spring tension for you both, we need to turn to a recommendation. Unfortunately, as you are probably aware, the published details of the Harrison product you refer to are limited in terms of the upholstery layers and the GSM (grams per square metre) of those upholstery layers is not given. This makes any form of comparison impossible. What I can say is that in the Harrison mattress, the spring count is achieved by including layers of mini springs in addition to the main spring unit. In our view, the layers of mini springs that replace layers of upholstery and do not necessarily bring anything to the table in terms of comfort.

Our Artisan range contains natural upholstery layers and I would suggest that you view the details of the Artisan Naturals, Artisan Bespoke 004 and the Artisan Bespoke. All of these products can be made with a medium spring tension, however, the layers of upholstery have different feels. The Naturals and Bespoke 004 have a similar feel and the main difference is in terms of the % of natural upholstery with the former having 85% and the latter 100%. The upholstery in Artisan Bespoke will provide a slightly firmer feel than the other two.

Kind regards,

Amy.
