N:rem sleep system mattress

I have been looking at the n:rem sleep system mattress which is designed for fibromyalgia/arthritis sufferers. I am told it is made with 2000 micro pocket springs and the upholstery component is organic cotton and blocks of reflex foam of different densities which are able to be moved around to suit one’s personal comfort. What is your take on this pricey mattress and its comparability to your mattresses please as I am looking to change mine pretty soon. Thanks

Hi Bouchellechick47,

I’m aware of the N:rem mattress and have spent some time bouncing around on a few in the past.  I’ve also seen other style ‘build a block’ mattresses in the past.  It’s a really interesting concept and certainly got my attention at being able to move around sections to get different feels for different parts of your body.  You can probably imagine in our mattress design lab and testing area we have been experimenting with a huge array of construction techniques over the years!  We are the mattress geeks!

My reservation with something like this is how likely you are to want to keep moving parts around in your mattress.  Secondly given the fact reflex foam is very dense and therefore warm is something I would have on my mattress design ‘avoid’ list.  Thirdly, having designed a number of foam mattresses trial and error with different densities of foam on the same layer can lead to different compression durations.

I’ll try and explain what I mean by compression durations.  Every foam has a density and hardness factor.  They inevitably all have different tolerances for compression.  Softer foams ie lower density usually compress faster than higher density or firmer foams.  There is always settlement in mattresses, anyone who says otherwise is ill informed.  This is why we always recommend turning of mattresses every month to even out this settlement.  It seems having different density foams on the same layer would make this very very difficult.

As a mattress designer, I’d bare this in mind with any design that involves different densities on the same layer.  My worry if I designed something similar is that the softer pads compress quicker over its lifespan and you could end up with one foam compressing quicker than another.  This could lead to a dip in one section of foam or you needing to replace the softer blocks.

We don’t manufacture anything this complex in terms of foam and don’t have any plans to due to the concerns above about longevity.  That’s not to say I’m against this mattress style but I find that keeping things simple where you can is usually a better design methodology but that’s just my opinion.  Our Fusion solid core latex range for example are incredibly progressive meaning that they can accommodate hips, shoulders and knees to just to right amount of sink before providing support.  They are very forgiving and not as heat retentive as reflex or memory foam. Due to the fact they are a solid piece of natural latex you can turn and rotate them avoiding the issues with one sided mattresses.  I understand that our Fusion latex mattresses are more expensive than the N:rem models but they are a natural material and so I’m not being fair as they are not like for like comparisons.  We also have our Hybrid range which may be of interest for you, which are foam based mattresses.
