How often should I change my mattress?

Marilla Miles-Wilson asked
30th August 2016

I have had my memory foam (not Tempur) mattress for 12 years now and although it seems okay I was wondering whether there was a ‘life span’ on mattresses, and what you suggest would be the optimum time to change a mattress.

Hi Marilla,

This is a frequently asked question, you may have seen dreams ‘replace every 8’ years marketing campaign to change your mattress. However, we think this needs more explanation. It’s near impossible to state ‘replace every 8’ as some people may need to replace sooner or others mattresses may last far longer. We guess they are trying to do a one size fits all average.

Put simply, if you look after your mattress, turn rotate and make sure it’s kept clean and protected then there is no shelf life on a mattress. It’s like how long will a coat last. It depends if you look after it or how often or much you use it. If you’re sleeping 14 hours a day or spending a lot of time in bed it won’t last as long as someone only using it for a few hours a night.

If you follow our care guides here by using a protector and ensuring you look after your purchase it should last in excess of our guarantee. Our guarantee is based on the average not so careful wear of mattresses that is common. A lot of people forget to turn their mattress may not look after it as much or even abuse their mattress!

Also, the components in your mattress will also affect its shelf life. A cheap shoddily made mattress won’t last half as long as a handmade mattress with heavyweight GSM fillings. So it’s really a case of you get what you pay for. Your body weight and change in lifestyle will also affect the shelf life of a mattress, if you put on say weight the excess may degrade the mattress far quicker than a light 9 stone sleeper.

If your Tempur is still comfortable, free from dips, sags or uneven bits then keep using it Marilla! If it’s starting to show wear, be uncomfortable or no longer support you then maybe give us a call on 0161 437 4419 to discuss what your other options are.
