TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

What would you recommend for very different weights and sizes?

I am 5ft 8″ and around 10 stones, and my husband is 6ft 4″ and 16.5 stones. I have longstanding back issues and need a very supportive mattress (one I can lie on my front and side on as well as my back). I like a firm supportive feel but find our current mattress (A John Lewis Natural Collection 4000 Cotton Medium) too firm (especially for my hip – I have bursistis too) and my husband finds it a bit too soft (he lies on his front and side and is obviously much bigger than me). What mattress would you recommend for us? I’d prefer to steer away from memory foam if possible. Id be really grateful for any advice you might be able to give me. Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Sorry to hear you are struggling with your John Lewis Natural Collection 4000 pocket sprung mattress. This is a dual spring mattress and some people don’t get on with them that well. Usually, people find them too bouncy and lighter sleepers may find that there is maybe too much support given the two layers of springs.

For your weight and bursistis I’d say a medium spring tension is a better support rather than soft, then maybe a medium feel in the top upholstery layer to give you the comfort you need. I’d recommend a firm spring tension for your partner as at his weight the medium spring will be giving too much. Spring tensions are dictated by weight and you are on the cusp of medium – soft and he is in the firm tension.

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

Have a look at our Artisan Naturals one side medium and one side firm. It will give you both a medium feel in the top upholstery layer but the split spring tension will accommodate both your weights and sleeping styles.

Please call us if you need any more help once you’ve had a look at the Naturals model.  If you require further advice or guidance, please telephone our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
