Problems with Harrisons Antigua mattress

Rich asked
2nd March 2013

Hi, Thanks for a brilliant website chaps!

Wish I’d found it sooner!

I have a Harrisons Antigua 3000 divan – mattress is 2000 springs, one sided, and is filled with a ‘cotton blend’ and a ‘wool blend’. I have two problems with it: 1. I find it too hot at times, and 2. it seems to have an unpleasant pressure effect on my leg sometimes. Weird eh?

I had a warm side/cool side pocket sprung from Dreams last, with which I had no issues at all. So I have two questions really. 1. Is it common for people to feel too hot sleeping on a wool filling?

Should I be looking for a polyester filled bed, in that case?

2. ANy thoughts as to the uncomfortable pressure feeling that I experience?

I wondered if it was the spring within a spring system that Harrisons use, and the first spring was bottoming out?

I’m about 12st. Many thanks Rich .

Hi Rich.

The description for The Harrisons Antigua is as follows: [Fairway Furnishers: Feb 2013] ” ..The layers of natural wool and cotton blends provide a luxrious (sic) layer of comfort and help to regulate the body’s temperature during sleep.

Add this to the Contura layer of foam, which provides exceptional additional comfort and support ..” Further description on this site gives the following detail: > Revolutionary springs/” title=”pocket spring”>pocket spring system for truly outstanding support > 2000 pocketed springs for great support and durability > All natural fillings, including wool, posturfil and cotton > Double rom of side stitching to keep the fillings in place and aid durability > Contura had-teased foam layer for enhanced air circulation > Amicor pure treated outer fabrics As a sidenote I wouldn’t really class posturfil as a “natural filling”.

I also do not think the description saying “..> Contura had-teased (sic) foam layer for enhanced air circulation” can rightly be described as “hand teased” (this a term used for loose natural fibres – not foam) Incidentally, it does say “had-teased” on the site and I assume it was meant to read “hand teased”.

Also, if the cotton and wool are blended with an element of polyester makes the statement “All natural fillings, including wool, posturfil and cotton” in my opinion a bit misleading.

As always, I do stand to be corrected on this and an amendment will be made if incorrect.

In the meantime I think you should contact the manufacturer to confirm [Aftersales: 0113 205 5214].

There really isn’t anything that jumps out as being overly heat retentive.

I assume the Contura component is very close to the spring unit and so it is only the Wool blend and Cotton blend as the comfort layers.

The fact that the specification does not tell you what the wool and cotton are blended with leaves me further to assume it is polyester of an unknown ratio.

Taking into account the current retail price (about £900 for the Kingsize divan set) gives further credence to this assumption.

If the mattress is unbearably hot for you I would look at reducing the tog rating on your duvet.

This is a good remedy to reduce the heat build up on memory foam mattresses and so should give you the solution you are after.

As for the pressure you are feeling on your legs – I have no idea.

You did say that you feel this ‘sometimes’ which leads me to conclude it is unlikely to be the mattress.

If it were, you would have this feeling every night.

There is a possibility that you may have a leg disorder of sorts – you never know.

It is unlikely that the springs have failed.

However, once again taking the price of this set into consideration, I wonder if the entire spring unit is utilising the Revolution Spring in Spring pockets.

Again, this information should be readily available on site to avoid you having to phone up and question the manufacturer.

I would be inclined to question whether ALL the springs utilise the spring in spring pockets or are they zoned?

The description from this particular retailer does not even mention ‘Revolution’ pocket springs but “Revolutionary”.

I would be inclined to ask specific questions.

Hope this helps Rich.

It would help if you let me know the retailer where you purchased this from.

Their description may be different to the one quoted above and I would like to hope a bit more intrinsic detail was given.

Please let us know what you decide upon.

Kind Regards Gary
