Problems with John Lewis Yorkshire Wool mattress

Vanessa asked
19th December 2014

I wonder If you can advise me.

I have had a john Lewis natural Collection Yorkshire wool medium support mattress on their divan base for approx.

7 months now.

I wasn’t sure whether the mattress was too soft for my lower back and John Lewis did offer to exchange it.

I left pursuing it due to circumstances but as my lower back pain is no better, wonder if I should have changed it for the John Lewis Egyptian Cotton medium support mattress and whether to look into this at this stage.

Your advice would be much appreciated.

I weigh around 9 stone and 5′ 6″ approx.

Thanks Vanessa Submitted on 2014/12/21 at 13:05 Hi can you advise me please .

A few months ago I purchased a natural collection Yorkshire wool medium support mattress and divan base from John Lewis, on the advice of the sales staff I thought this would be good support for my lower back problems whilst also providing pressure relief.

The mattress has a cool and warm side to turn with the seasons, although I am always hot even on the cool side.

I was undecided between this mattress and the slightly firmer Egyptian cotton medium support mattress which is rotate only and does not have the wool layers in the topping.

Since sleeping on the mattress my back problems have not improved, if anything seem worse, the wool mattress feels quite dense under my lower back and I am wondering if it is too soft for my back and wake up with bad aching.

Do you think the Egyptian cotton mattress would be better for my back.

John Lewis did offer to change the mattress, although this was a while ago, so not sure if they would be willing to still do so.

Have had regular physiotherapy for back and now going to go to a chiropractor, but difficult to know if the bed is not helping.

Would appreciate your advice Many thanks Vanessa Submitted on 2014/12/21 at 13:15 Hi further to my earlier e mail from Vanessa re query re natural collection Yorkshire wool mattress from John Lewis, I forgot to say I weigh approx.

9 stone and am approx.

5′ 6.

Any advice you can give would be much appreciated thanks Vanessa

Hi Vanessa,

Thanks for your question.

First of all I must advise that it is impossible for us to provide a recommendation between the two mattresses you refer to as there are no details of the upholstery layers by way of GSM (grams per square metre) provided in any of the literature available from John Lewis.

What I can say is that the Yorkshire Wool mattress is indeed a two sided mattress enabling turning and rotating, which makes this mattress a better option than the one sided Egyptian Cotton mattress, from a lifespan viewpoint. We always advise to choose a 2 sided mattress as this means, as part of correct care and maintenance, that you can flip and rotate it to allow even distribution of wear and tear as well as even settlement of all fillings across both sides of the mattress.

For your assistance, I would advise that the feel of the mattress will be affected by what type of base it is on and I note that you have it on a true edge sprung base. This base will have an effect of making the mattress feel medium as sold. However, it could be that, given your body weight, a mattress with a soft spring tension is more appropriate.

Our own Artisan range is the range that we compare with Vi-Spring that can be found in stores such as Furniture Village, Harrods, House of Fraser or And So To Bed. John Lewis have their own Vi-Spring models and their own construction methods so we have nothing to compare with unfortunately.

The Artisan range isn’t a turn with the seasons range but the natural fillings used in the construction provide a cool sleep surface. The Luxury is the softest mattress we have in the top layers, the Naturals is the true medium providing a slight sink but not too much and the Bespoke is the firmest in those layers with no sink at all. We’d always recommend testing the comparison models beforehand but as we are an online only retailer this is the main reason we have our 60 day love it or return it guarantee. This is a no quibble policy meaning that if the product isn’t right you can return it for a full refund or utilise the one time exchange and swap to a different product.
