Problems with King Koil mattress please help

Nancy asked
3rd February 2012

Hi, we just purchased a King Koil super king mattress for a small fortune!

It is half pocket springs and half memory foam. We have only slept on it for SEVEN DAYS and we absolutely HATE IT!

It is HOT, HOT, HOT – so hot that we can’t stand it. We have also been going to a chiropractor weekly for back problems, fibromyalgia etc and we are now waking up in sink holes, in pain and are miserable. We cannot afford another bed at this time. I understand that you’re not supposed to flip it over, but what if we did?

I honestly don’t know what the other side is like, but if it’s too hard, I suppose we could add some kind of topper. PLEASE, WE’RE DESPERATE. Do you have any suggestions?

We’re willing to buy the topper or whatever from you. Thank you!

Hi Nancy.

I really do feel so sorry for your situation.

I really would explain to the retailer of your discomfort.

Even a swap would make amends.

memory Foam really is heat retentive, and this will not show itself until you have spent a complete night on it.

But as you have found out to your cost – it then becomes too late.

What you need to do is to place a cushioning barrier (topper) between you and the memory foam.

It may not take too much as it is the memory foam that is causing you discomfort.

Polyester (as in a duvet) in this situation is not particularly a good idea, as that too can be quite heat retentive – but it may help in the meantime in order for you to get some sleep.

A low tog feather topper is the next solution – a bit pricier but it may help.

Consider also reducing your current duvet to a lower tog (4.5) in order to let more air circulate between you and the outside world.

Cotton sheets rather than polyester will help.

If you get no satisfaction from Kaymed then have a look at this site who offer products for people who do suffer from night sweats etc: King Koil is a brand of Kaymed.

They do hold themselves up as a leader in memory foam products.

It may help if you phone their head office (Dublin) 0353 1 4192999.

Lets hope you speak to someone who sympathises.

As a last resort, you can turn the mattress upside down.

The base will usually be quite firm, but placing your own cushioning layer, such as a duvet beneath the bottom sheet will help.

Another thing to bear in mind is that it is a huge step from an old mattress and of course a big change.

There is still a chance that you will get used to it.
