Questions about Artisan Bespoke bases

David asked

Hi Having spent a fair amount of time reading through the many posts, the one post I can not see many comments about is the divan bases. You show in great detail how your mattresses compare to Vi Spring, I have been looking at the artisan bespoke 002 compared to the Tiara Superb, the mattress you supply appears to be of similar standard for a much better price, however the base has little or no comparison information. Your information suggests about 1000 springs the Tiara has at least 1344 springs in kingsize. Are the materials used in construction similar?

Do all of the artisan range come with the same base?

Hi David.

Thank you for your question.  We have not had the opportunity to see how a Vi-Spring base is constructed in order to give a fair and accurate comparison.  We do know that the side edges are not true edge (as Harrisons are) meaning that when you sit on the edge of the mattress the base will also compress somewhat.  Harrison’s bases (and our Artisan Base) have the pocket springs inset into the framework to offer additional edge support for the mattress.

Divan bases all follow a similar method of construction.  The more expensive the base will mean a higher level of construction.  Dovetailed wooden drawers (Vi-Spring) for example.  Natural fibre insulators / upholstery etc.  The bases we offer in the Artisan range are well made but not quite in the same league as Vi-Spring (Average cost £950 Prestige Double base (No Storage) John Lewis: January 2013.  However, bear in mind that our standards are exceptionally high and I think our quality of build overall offers a better buy pound for pound and an equal level of support/comfort.

The bases we offer for the Artisan range will either be open coil sprung or pocket sprung and the prices reflect this difference.
