Questions on cot mattress

LN asked
27th January 2015

I recently ordered a cot bed mattress from a healthcare company in Ireland. I am now concerned as the mattress is treated with fire retaradant and the chemicals are thought to be harmful to babies. Is this true?

Are all infant mattresses treated with toxins?

Hi LN,

Thank you for your question.

It depends on which sources you look at. We have a guide here to cot mattress safety which covers VOC’s and phthalates something you need to be aware of. We know how stressful it can be trying to find a cot mattress that’s as natural as possible whilst also being safe. It also depends on whether your baby is prone to any allergies or intolerances. We are not medical professionals so we couldn’t say for definite on the model you have listed.

Our Natural Cot Mattress is not treated with chemicals. We have an article here as well explaining exactly what to look for when buying a safe cot mattress for your little one. We also provide guidance on what to look for in a cot mattress within this article to help new parents find a suitable mattress for their new born.
What we can say is that all mattresses need a fire retardant layer for your safety and must pass the UK FR regulations to be legal. This can be done either by materials such as wool or graphite latex or chemical sprays.

We would advise if you’re worried to contact your doctor about medical implications but to maybe avoid the chemical spray fire retardant methods which seem to have the largest chemical trail.

We hope that helps but if you require any further information or guidance, please telephone our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
