Replacement for Tempur mattress

Stephen asked
17th January 2013

Dear John and Ryan, I currently have a ten year old Tempur mattress which is past its best. It has lost much of its support and is now softer than when new, which often causes me to wake up in the morning hot, dehydrated and with back pain. I have had enough and am currently looking for a traditional pocket sprung mattress with natural fillings to replace it with. I visited my nearest Vi Spring stockist and tried their entry-mid range offerings from the Elite to the Tiara Superb. The Signatory, Magnificance and other similar mattresses with ridiculous 5 figure RRPs were not on the shop floor!

Hi Stephen.

As there are quite a few questions within your comment I have answered them separately ..

The Elite was the only mattress on display with a firm spring tension, which I found most comfortable of all, probably due to being 6ft 3 and 17.5 stone.

Interestingly, I found the Herald Superb more comfortable than the Regal Superb, both with a medium spring tension.

The Shetland Superb with its all wool construction was too soft for me.

Finally, I could not appreciate the additional comfort/support from the double layer of springs found in Tiara Superb over that of the Herald Superb.

Does having two spring layers always enhance comfort over a single spring layer?

The Vi Spring Elite is a predominantly wool based mattress which although is obviously comfortable for an entry level mattress from VS, I think not entirely suitable for your bodyweight.

It may have been the firm spring tension (no gauge is given as to what VS deem to be firm) that gave you the support you require.

There is no real significant difference between The Herald Superb and The Regal Superb so I think your basis of choice can be seen as perception.

To explain this, the RS has a combined upholstery weight of 3100gsm made up of the following ..

1,000gsm bonded British fleece wool and cotton, then 1,200gsm long-stranded horsetail blended with British fleece wool and enclosed in a hair-proof cambric cover.

Overlaid with a layer of 900gsm blended real Shetland Isle fleece wool and cotton.

The HS has a combined upholstery weight of 3400gsm made up of the following ..

Upholstered with 1,000gsm bonded British fleece wool and cotton, then 1,200gsm long-stranded horsehair, enclosed in a hair-proof cambric cover (you can learn more about gsm here).

Overlaid with a layer of 1,200gsm blended British fleece wool and cotton.

Side by side the upholstery differences are negligible.

The difference you felt may be down to the spring composition 1476 HS v 1720 RS.

But even this is again negligible.

The difference in *retail price – £1764.

RS v £2950.

HS – should beg the question, are the extra 200 odd springs and 300 grams of upholstery worth paying an extra £1200 or so pounds for?

[*Prices: Kingsize mattress: Furniture Village: January 2013] Due to my height I am looking for a 7ftx7ft Emperor sized bed, to avoid sleeping diagonally and disturbing my bed partner.

She is 5ft 9 and a similar weight.

And So To Bed offered me a Large Emperor (215 cm x 215 cm) HS mattress with divan for £4400 (Was £6485, on sale for £5185, with 10% off £4666.50 and a time limited best price of £4400).

Would you be able to supply such an oversized mattress as one piece?

If so, then which would you recommend from your range?

We can offer this size of mattress as a one piece but the weight using our Artisan Bespoke as an example will be in excess of 100kg.

The delivery of a standard SKS (6′ x 6’6) generally proves quite a challenge particularly when access is tight.

Any size above Superking will incur an additional 10% per six inch increments width, and 10% per six inch increment length.

I would also consider the maintenance challenge of turning and rotating a monster mattress of this size.

I really would recommend you consider the Ziplink option (you view our range of mattresses here).

Out of interest, I notice the JR-AB-002 uses bamboo as a comfort layer whilst the original JR-AB omits this and included 1000 gsm of cashmere instead.

How do these two different natural fillings affect the support?

As the JR-AB=002 is a close comparable model to the VS Tiara Superb we had to introduce an element of difference so as not to be accused of direct copying.

Bamboo is a very soft component and although nice to have included will not overly influence the support.

This brings me to your question about the double layer springs v single layer.

Again, I personally do not think overly necessary which may surprise you.

We have obviously tried our Bespoke 002 side by side to our Bespoke 004 and although there is an obvious extra level of support which would be more beneficial for people of an above average bodyweight, it’s not necessary for people with average weights.

I do not think the extra expense involved gives you the extra pound value in overall comfort.

Bear in mind Stephen that there is only so many combinations of upholstery that can be put into a mattress.

In order to increase the sale price, particularly at levels like this, the only other feasible option is to increase the spring counts.

Vi Springs core range is split into two – One range utilising the single layer of springs and one range that utilises the double layer.

As you have pointed out the retail prices increase dramatically.

If you look at The Magnificence spec ..

Upholstered with 900gsm blended real Shetland Isle fleece wool and cotton, then 610gsm hand-opened and hand-teased long-stranded horsetail enclosed in a hair-proof cambric cover.

Layered with 200gsm cashmere, 200gsm mohair and 600gsm hand-teased real Shetland Isle fleece wool, overlaid with 1,200gsm blended real Shetland Isle fleece wool and cotton.

and compare it to The Regal Superb spec ..

Upholstered with 1,000gsm bonded British fleece wool and cotton, then 1,200gsm long-stranded horsetail blended with British fleece wool and enclosed in a hair-proof cambric cover.

Overlaid with a layer of 900gsm blended real Shetland Isle fleece wool and cotton.

..

you will see that the combined upholstery weight on The Magnificence is 3710gsm and the combined upholstery weight on The Regal Superb is 3100 gsm.

The Magnificence utilises two layers of springs and The RS just one layer.

You know the difference in price between these two models are in the thousands – the question you should be asking is, is what you are getting extra in the mattress worth this amount?

Finally Stephen, these have been good questions and interesting to add my point of view.

My answers are quite simplistic taking into account the depth of each question but I do hope they steer you in the right direction.

I would say that even though we have used Vi Spring as the basis of example, these theories apply to many if not all manufacturers.

Vi Spring is a premier company at the top of their game and obviously, like all luxury goods, the best comes at a price.

People who can afford their products should of course buy them without a second thought.

John and Ryan.
