Replacing a John Lewis open coil temporary mattress

Jacqueline asked
20th October 2015

Dear John and Ryan,
Thanks for this brilliant site with open and honest advice! My husband and I have been using a temporary double bed with slatted base and a john Lewis value open spring mattress which was meant to be a stop gap until we had decorated our new house and we’re ready to take the time to invest in our bed and mattress. We put up with it for over a year and needless to say it was not particularly comfortable. As the bed will now be used as a guest bed we ordered a replacement cheap foam mattress online with a memory foam layer on top which although my husband finds quite comfortable, I think it is too hot for my liking and maybe a little too soft. For our bedroom, as I’m not really keen on the look of divan beds, we have gone for a kingsize bed with ‘central support and wooden slats’. We want to go for a mid-range price mattress but want to get the best we can for our money. I’m 5ft 3 and 10st and my husband is 6ft and 13st. I love the idea of getting a quality calico encased pocket sprung mattress but we can’t really afford that right now. I think we’d like to spend about £500 on the mattress and maybe get a good topper with a view to spending £1000+ in a couple of years time on our ideal mattress. Any advice would be much appreciated and if you could recommend a similar mattress we could go and test in a store that would be helpful!
Regards
Jacqueline

Hi Jacqueline,

Thanks for your question.

With your body weights I would recommend that you opt for a Medium spring tension to get the right support;

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

Having noted your budget, would suggest that you look at our Origins Pocket 1500. This mattress has synthetic upholstery layers, pocket springs contained within a spun-bond fabric and will provide a standard medium feel.

If placing this mattress on a slatted base with a central support, you should look to place a barrier between the slats and the mattress in the form of 3-5mm MDF sheeting or peg board.

This will provide the mattress with a uniform surface upon which to rest and will prevent any ridging occurring as a result of the slats.

Please be aware that this will make the mattress feel slightly firmer, but will protect the reverse side for when you turn and rotate.

I hope that this helps but if you have any further queries please don’t hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Mike.
