Hi I am 55 and 21stone For the greater part of my life i have slept on a dunlopillo firmrest mattress very happily , the most recent one I bought about 4 years ago Its a kingsize I have noticed in the last year or so its sunk on one side I confess i am getting heavier as i get older Do you think its my weight that has done for the mattress which was always so good for me in the past?

Can you make any recommendation I like something fairly firm Its is and needs to be kingsize ie 6 foot .

Hi Stephen.

Sorry to say, your weight is the overriding factor. I must say you did make the right choice of Dunlopillo Firmrest albeit I am sure you paid over the odds for it. Bear in mind now that Dunlopillo is not the same now as it was in the past. Their manufacturing plants have all but closed and the product itself is now completely different – despite what they will tell you!I had a Dunlopillo in the past and the product I see today is certainly not the same. There is one sentence in their 28-page brochure that should ring alarm bells – or (without me being so dramatic) should give cause for further questioning…and that is.”The process begins with careful blending to produce a mixture that is the basis of Dunlopillo latex.” Let me explain. On all Dunlopillo product descriptions, it says the core is made of “100% Dunlopillo latex for superb comfort and performance”.Many people might take this as 100% latex – Which it isn’t [and I do stand to be corrected]. the sentence I referred to above states that it has gone through careful BLENDING – but it never states what the ratio with synthetic latex it is blended with! As far as I can currently ascertain, the ‘latex’ used in Dunlopillo products can be one of three grades: A 40/60 mix (which means 40% latex with 60% synthetic latex) a 65/35 mix and a premium 85/15 mix.I want to point out that until I get concrete and factual data on this, you can only take this as my assumption and NOT actual fact.

This data is seriously hard to get hold of but I do not think I am far off the mark. All this is by the by. The latex of this quality (even the 40/60 mix which we have in our Origins Pocket Latex) is far, far superior to any memory foam product. And as a product used for mattresses, it is still one of the most comfortable and equally durable components – IF the depth is sufficient. If a mattress is described as containing latex, you really must establish the actual depth used.

For you Stephen, I do think you should stick with this particular build i.e: Solid core latex. However, I would hang fire for a few more weeks as Ryan and I will be shortly introducing a range of solid core latex mattresses (based on the Dunlopillo Royal Sovereign, Nouveau and Celeste – as examples) I will mail you when I have more details on this product.

[Update: June 2012] I have now finalised the meeting with my Latex source and I have come to the conclusion that it is currently not feasible to proceed with this project.

The reasons are many and varied but the main one is that I feel the cost price of the latex component offered is still kept at an artificially inflated price which makes it inconceivable to proceed.

If you are still considering the Dunlopillo mattresses we feel you will be getting a quality product – albeit at a price that in our opinion could reasonably be offered for much less.

Thank you for your continued interest and I am really sorry this did not pan out as we anticipated.

In time we hope to reinvestigate this project and hopefully.

succeed.

John and Ryan.
