The right mattress for me

Lindsey asked
17th January 2017

Hi I’m Lindsey I’m 5foot 3 and weigh 9 stone my husband is 5foot 8 and weighs 16 stone. We are currently sleeping on a Tempur Cloud 22 on a solid slated base my husband feels ok on it but I’m a different matter altogether. I can’t sleep in it at all after just half hour the pain begins I’m a side sleeper and I can only describe my pain as though my ribs are been squeezed together. I can only sleep on my right side as my left side is just too painful in my shoulder. When I’m on my right side my left ribs feel like there collapsing and my right ribs feel like there been pressed upwards which then makes it feel like I’ve got a tight band around me all night. We have tried so many different mattresses over the years and spent so much money this Tempur cost 1500 hundred and before that we had a Sealy another 1000 pounds I’m currently sleeping on the settee!! Most shops can’t believe I can’t sleep on the Tempur or didn’t sleep well on a Sealy? I just want a comfortable bed it’s so hard to find the right one but I know I definitely don’t ever want memory foam again. I’m actually writing this from my bed (the settee) we sleep on king size mattresses could you please recommend something that would help me get some quality sleep and if you could explain why the Tempur is so bad for me when we paid all that money when everyone well most everyone says tempur is the best for comfort and aching bones it’s certainly added to my pains thank you

Hi Lindsey,

Thank you for your enquiry. We are sorry to hear of the problems you have currently with your Tempur mattress. With your particular body weight, we would suggest that you are borderline so you could get the correct support from either the soft or medium spring tension, whereas your husband is definitely a medium. We cannot see how a mattress with no variance in the overall feel can be suitable for two people of such different body weights, one feel definitely does not suit all. This is probably the reason for your aches and pains because as a side sleeper, you need the right spring tension together with softer upholstery layers, which is not what you are getting from your Tempur mattress. The advice you are receiving regarding suitability is probably being provided by retailers who sell Tempur mattresses and is therefore not unbiased.

Memory foam is notorious for heat retention and slowness to return to shape, so much so that when you come to change position at night, it can feel like you have to climb out of a hole. This is why we do not recommend memory foam.

Artisan Luxury mattress

Please view the Origins Comfort 1000, which has a standard medium spring unit together with soft man-made upholstery layers, ideal for side sleepers. Alternatively, if your budget permits, please view the Artisan Luxury, which can have the spring tension selected to suit and has soft natural upholstery layers.  If you would prefer a soft spring tension we can make this mattress with a dual spring tension (one side soft for yourself and the other medium for your husband).  This can be achieved as either a one-piece mattress or a zip and link in king size and above.

We trust that the above helps, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419 and speak with one of our advisors.

Kind Regards.
