TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Hi – I am looking for a new mattress but, despite all the very helpful information on your web site, I am still unsure as to what would be best for my wife and I. Our bed base (which I am currently building !) will be a platform bed with the top of the base being either solid plywood/timber or (if better for the mattress?) a series of plywood slats.
We both weigh the same (around 9 stones) and both prefer to sleep on our sides. We have been using a Tempur memory foam mattress for well over 10 years, with a feather topper. Our current mattress is not uncomfortable as such but my wife in particular finds it too warm sometimes and now and again when on holiday we notice that we sleep better on softer hotel mattresses (which is why we added the feather topper some time ago).
I was quite interested in your comments on latex mattresses and also found that Dunlopillo mattresses were the best rated mattresses in a Which? survey. Now I have read the Which? June 15 review and find that they rave about a Sealy Pocket Teramo 1400 so am now leaning towards springs/” title=”pocket spring”>pocket spring.
I am comforted by your return policy but equally dont want the hassle of having to return a mattress. So, I wonder if that lengthy preamble gives you enough information to be able to offer me any pointers as to which range is likely to be the best match for us?
Many thanks

Hi Steve,

Firstly great news with building your own bed base.  I love it when people get hands on with bespoke work.  I would love to see some pictures when it’s done, as John in particular really enthuses about one off bed pieces!

Many people have huge issue with memory and Tempur foam due to the heat retention issues.  Whilst these style mattresses can offer that weightless sink and comfort the heat for some is just unbearable.

We always recommend Natural Latex as a far less heat retentive and much more responsive alternative to these style mattresses.

I’d beware of pillowtop mattresses like the Teramo as we have highlighted the issues with non turnable pillowtop mattresses on numerous occasions, see this recent comment here for more.

Rather than recommend more confusing options to the mix I’ll start off by recommending you look at the Fusion 3 a solid core 100% natural latex mattress.  This will be medium but with a forgiving progressive sink feel in the topper layer.  It’s cooler than memory foam and two sided, ie you get much more life out of your mattress as you can turn it.  We do have an alternative in the Origins 1500 Latex but at your weight it would be quite firm feeling which I know you are looking to avoid.
