Sealy versus Somnus mattress

Liz asked

Hello, What a great site you have, so informative!

I’ve been on the hunt for a new bed since we stayed at the Four Seasons recently and fell in love with the bed they had there. It was a medium/soft with a topper built in like you see on the Sealy’s. The Sealy Toscana 1400 is the closest I could find in my local stores. But to my massive disappointment, I’ve been reading the reviews of the Sealy’s and they seem to be universally hated. I then tried a Somnus in the local store and loved that until I saw the price!

Lovely but out of my budget 🙂 At the moment we have a SuperKing Zip and Link (because of access issues to our bedroom) which is 8/9 Years old and ideally we’d only like to replace the mattress. What would you recommend?

Many Thanks Liz .

Hi Liz,

Thanks for your question.

Your budget will have a huge bearing on the mattresses we can recommend. However, as you don’t disclose your budget here we can’t advise definitively but will certainly offer advice.

Please note that we would always advise against mattresses with built in toppers (often referred to as pillow tops). There are a number of reasons for this with the main one being if the topper fails or compresses then there is nothing you can do with it due to the built in nature.

As such we would always recommend a completely separate detachable topper as you can then flip and rotate this increasing the longevity of the mattress. Generally you pair a foam mattress with a foam topper, a latex mattress with a latex topper etc.

I would personally guide you to our Origins Pocket 1500 or Artisan Naturals. Both are traditional pocket sprung mattresses with the main difference being that the Artisan range is constructed with natural fillings that provide a cool sleep surface. Both models are a medium in the top upholstery meaning that you will have a slight sink into the top layer but not too much.

We would need to know your body weights in order to discuss suitability;

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

I’ve advised on both these ranges as you haven’t disclosed budget but this hopefully gives you something to work with.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don’t hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
