TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Should I choose a talalay and dunlop mixed latex mattress?

Gilbert asked
14th May 2015

Morning, I spoke to a lady (Julia?) on the phone and she was very helpful in advising the 2 models that will suit me (Fusion 1 or 3) for 100% latex mattress.
I through I will write in with a question I had to clarify my query.
I have filtered down to 2 sellers (you guys) and one close to me (www.Latexsense.co.uk), so I am comparing the 2 products offering.
I understanding the Fusion is 100% Dulop latex. I have seen another product that provides a mix of Dunlop core (18cm) and Talalay Natural Latex (5cm) and variation such as 15cm core Dunlop and 5cm medium Talalay, 3cm softer Talalay.
Q: In your professional opinion, how would having both type of latex differ form just using one type of latex?
I am around 13 stone, so would need a medium to firm or medium.
I also see that with 100% Talalay core or Dunlop mattress, the outer layers may use wool, polyester paddings, Bamboo, Tecel covers.
Q: Talalay or Dunlop Cores, how does these outlayers materials effect the mattress or is the difference minimal and just rather cost to manufacture?
Thank you so much for your expert advise.

Hi Gilbert,

Thanks for your query and apologies in the delay in getting back to you we’ve been incredibly busy.

In my latex experience, whilst you can mix latex manufacture types there is really no need to. The more layers and types you mix the more adhesives you introduce and longevity then suffers. Why mix a high quality product like latex when it in its purest form is fantastic as it is? I’d either pick 100% talalay or 100% dunlop. There is no need to mix the two. It’s splitting the hair so the speak.

The adhesives also increase the synthetic components unnecessarily.

Talalay is softer and more expensive due to the construction method. It isn’t quite as progressive as Dunlop which is why we use Dunlop in our solid core range.

The outer layers are usually just used for a marketing exercise to charge more. We have written on how all these ‘natural’ materials in reality never account to more than 4-6% natural mixed with polyester. Our Natural cotton cover is 40% natural cotton, which is a stretch fabric.

I’d ask Latex sense what percentage blend the bamboo or merino wool covers are. They will no way be 100% for the price. Just compare it to a 100% merino wool jumper from House of Fraser for example!

I’d say a medium density 70kg latex is more than enough for your weight. There is no such thing as super firm latex. By its very nature latex is incredibly malleable and has a top soft layer. If you want really firm, latex is not the material to try and achieve this tension. As such it might be worth having a look at our Fusions 5 and 3. Both have the same core 70kg medium density latex but the Fusion 3 has an additional and completely detachable Latex topper giving you an additional comfort layer to sink into before hitting the core mattress.
