Should I have a firm tension mattress for a firm edge?

Paul asked

i have an artisan natural mattress 3ft x 6ft6” medium tension on a hard top base ( non sprung edge) that I bought from you a few years ago and it is an excellent mattress! I am planning to buy a king size artisan natural from you in future to put in another bedroom and would appreciate guidance on the tension to choose for this larger bed. With my existing single mattress I find the firmer springs along the edge of the mattress really comfortable to sleep on ( so long as I don’t fall out of bed!) which makes me think that maybe I should be looking at a firm tension for the bigger mattress. I weigh 13.5 stone if that helps. Is it possible to have an artisan natural that is tweaked between medium and firm?

Hi Paul,

Thank you for your question.

It is possible to have an Artisan mattress in a split tension, medium one side and firm the other, however, you cannot buy a dual tension mattress which is medium/firm across the whole sleep surface.

At your body weight, the maximum spring tension we would recommend is the medium as the springs in the mattress need to move with your body weight in order to give you the correct support.  You are not therefore heavy enough to compress the firm spring to give you that support and would just be lying on top of them.  The firmer springs at the edge of our mattresses are there to stop the feeling of rolling off the mattress.  Also as the mattress is going to go onto a slatted base, this will firm the mattress up again in any event.

As the mattress is going to be in a spareroom, you would still be best ordering the mattress in a medium spring tension which will suit body weights of between 9st – 16.5st.
