Simba mattress overheating due to memory foam and latex. Please can you advise?

Lynn Reid asked

We bought the Simba mattress at the end of January. I tend to sweat more than the average person and some times overheat in bed. I’m not overweight and I tend to shower more than 1-2 hours before bedtime.

I find that the Simba mattress creates hot spots around the part of my body which is directly on the bed (obviously changes depending on sleep position). This is uncomfortable and I also think it will feel worse in the summer.

The Simba mattress has a top layer of latex and 3rd layer is memory foam. I’m aware of memory foam issues, however, I’m presuming that the latex is causing me the issue. Do you agree? Simba advertises the latex layer as “Cooling comfort layer: We’ve created a super comfort layer designed to tackle overheating and give you extra support.” This certainly isn’t the case for me. My husband does not generally overheat in bed. He says he feels it a bit hotter but at the same time, he’s fine with. I’m trying to talk him into sending it back and hopefully, extra information will help me since he’s trying to avoid! There is a high percentage of good reviews on Amazon for the mattress, only the odd one mentions overheating so I’m wondering why am I different!!

As per your information below from your website I’m wondering if the latex foam is causing a similar issue to the well know memory foam issue:

What the foam mattress manufacturers don’t tell you is that memory foams actually require heat to mould around you. This is what makes them able to wrap around you and conform to your body shape. This in turn also means that you’re held by the foam mattress and trapping this heat during the night. Leading to you getting warmer and warmer. That’s why memory foam feels so firm when you first get into bed because it’s cold and slow to react. As it warms up it softens.
Many thanks in advance.

Hi Lynn,

Thank you for your question.

The Simba Mattress, as you have pointed out, contains a layer of Latex and a layer of Memory Foam.   We are unsure as to whether the layer of latex used is 100% natural but if it is not a natural latex, then combined with the Memory Foam, will cause overheating for some people.

Memory foam is a man-made foam which has a high density and viscosity compared to other foams. Memory foam has an open cell structure which allows it to change shape with heat and mould. This type of foam is typically heat sensitive, which means it reacts to heat making it softer and more pliable, so when someone lies on it, their body warmth allows the memory foam to mould to their body shape. For some people, this is not a problem and they barely notice it, but for other ‘hot sleepers’ they have complained that it becomes too hot. It really is a personal preference but by its very nature memory foam is heat-retentive and much warmer than any other mattress material.
