Simmons Beautyrest Black Comparison?

Jamie Walker asked
20th April 2016

Hello,
We have just bought a Bo Concept Lugano bed and are looking for a 140cm x 200cm mattress size to fit it. Do you sell mattresses in this size and, if so, what would your recommendation be from your range please ? I think we would prefer a Latex or Hybrid mattress.
We recently stayed at a Starwood Luxury Collection hotel in Athens and the mattress there was very comfortable – I think it is a Simmons Beautyrest Black so may give you some idea of what might suit us.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks.

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for getting in touch, we certainly can make bespoke sizes which are priced based on the next size up usually. Given the bespoke nature of these sizes, we don’t provide a 30-day love it or return it guarantee, but you are covered as standard by our full repair or replace product guarantee.

I’ve had another customer reference the Simmons Beautyrest black this week which is interesting. It’s a very complicated product as the description is very wordy but not very specific!

Unfortunately, the product specification for this mattress is super vague which doesn’t help. I’ll try and respond to each of their websites blurbs to try and translate this into some form of comparison, but it will be very vague I’m afraid.

The first thing I see is the dreaded pillowtop which if stitched on means that once this layer goes or compresses which it usually does, then it’s game over for the mattress. It also means this is a one sided mattress, more on that problem here. You should always aim for a separate topper never stitched on.

Springs are referenced as ‘Advanced Pocketed Coil® Technology‘ which is an odd turn of phrase as it doesn’t sound like a pocket spring but more an open coil that’s been covered? There is a video online that shows them as pocket springs so I’ll take it they are.

It’s very tricky to give any info as there’s no wire diameter, tension or gauge given. These are described as ‘triple stranded coils provide greater durability than traditionally wrapped coils while delivering pressure relief, motion separation for undisturbed sleep, and back support‘. Again without specifics I’m not even sure how to analyse this other than they are pocket springs.

Triple wrapped springs would indicate even on a thin wire diameter of 1.2mm as being very firm if then three of these wires were then twisted and wrapped together? I certainly wouldn’t design a spring like this it’s kind of counter-productive given its a very complicated way of firming up a spring. Unless I’m mistaken as to why you would do this for any other reason?

It then has a memory foam layer, the hottest of all mattress materials.  It is described as ‘Micro Diamond™ Memory Foam‘ which then ‘works to create our best conforming back support‘, Like most memory foam would. Then an interesting part is when it talks about ‘Micro diamonds in the foam work to conduct heat away from the body to prevent overheating‘.  We have written about castellated foams but never micro diamond foam. We can honestly say we have never come across this. I’d be dubious about how this helps conduct heat away from the body given by the very nature of memory foam it needs heat to work properly. I can’t even begin to think how micro diamonds even feature, is it the shape of the castellated foam? Diamonds in the foam?! A very expensive combination or diamond shaped holes?!

What I can therefore gather from this product is that its a possible pocket spring unit with some form of diamond-shaped memory foam. We don’t sell any comparisons to this as we don’t sell ‘stand alone’ memory foam, it’s simply too hot on its own and tends to fail quickly. We couple it up with hybrid foams where it works well as a mid support layer, but not as a top comfort layer.

We do however have a pocket spring with a latex top layer mattress which is a similar construction method with it being a pocket sprung but talalay latex topped mattress. Minus the pillowtop aspect. It’s our Origins 1500 Latex, by its very nature of construction it is one-sided, similar to our Hybrid 4 and 5 models. If you’re wanting solid core latex, which is two sided and super progressive then please take a look at our Fusion 3. Our fusion range, however, is more similar to the Dunlopillo range that can be found in some furniture villages.

Given all the information it might be easier if you give us a call on 0161 437 4419. I mean its taken me a few hours with the mattress specifications Simmons gives to work out particularly how this mattress is constructed! If I’m confused I’m guessing you maybe too! The origins latex or fusion 3 is probably a good place to start your comparisons though.

I hope I’ve not simply confused you more but done my best to compare!
