Slatted base foam matts

John Wiffen asked

We recently bought an Artisan mattress from you and have it on a slatted base. I see you recommend covering the slats with MDF. Would it work to use two 15mm foam exercise mats which would give a flexible cushion? Or would that cause problems as the mattress may not breathe as easily?

Hi John,

It is important to place some form of barrier between the slats and the mattress.

The type of barrier is dependent upon that actual gaps between the slats.

If the slats are in excess of 7cm apart, then the advice would be to use MDF to provide a uniform surface upon which the mattress can sit and prevent ridging occurring as result of the mattress dipping into the gaps.

However, if the gaps are less than 7cm, anything, including foam exercise mats will suffice provided that they cover the majority of the base area. Some people have found that pieces of old carpet also fit the bill.

I trust that this helps.

Kind Regards Gary
