Sleepmaster Opulence and back ache?

Jill asked
18th May 2013

We recently bought a new complete bed from Dreams – it is a Sleepmaster Opulence and like a lot of other people we found it to be very comfortable in the shop – and a good (reduced) price!

However after it was delivered it was a different story – the right hand side (taken from the prone position!) seemed to be at a slight angle and I felt that I was falling out of bed. We turned the mattress around so the odd area was now on my husbands side where his legs are – and he found the same thing. The mattress is now supported by a pillow between it and the base!

Although the bed is a king size we find that we don’t have as much personal space as with our last bed and seem to roll together often. Consequently I now sleep so far over that I am right on the edge. We also both are suffering from aching lower backs and I have problems with my neck – I use a memory foam pillow – but that doesn’t give much relief. We have tried using a topper on the bed but I find it too hot (an age thing!). Over the last week I have tried my daughters bed (she’s at uni) which is a metal bedframe from M&S and a Bedmaster Majestic pockets with a topper. Sheer bliss – I sunk into the mattress and had the best weeks sleep for … well I can’t remember. And no special pillows needed either. I feel that we really need to change mattresses but worry that if we buy a similar Bedmaster would the result be the same on our sprung edge base?

I weigh 10 st and my husband is 13st – please could you advise – we both feel a soft mattress would be best but don’t want to waste our money again. .

Hi Jill,

Thanks for your question.

We don’t construct sprung edge bases; Ours are all true edge meaning that there is a firm piece of wood running around the perimeter of the base that prevents the “roll off” effect that we receive a lot of feedback about with sprung edge bases.

In order to get a definitive answer regarding whether the Bedmaster would be suited to the sprung edge base we’d always recommend speaking to the retailer of the products as they are best suited to discuss the suitability of their own products; We can only advise to a certain level.

We don’t construct any sort of memory foam mattress ourselves; We do have our Hybrid Foam range – These will give you a very similar sink in sensation to memory foam but without the associated heat issues. It’s worth noting here that these are solely foam mattresses meaning there are no pocket springs in the construction.

Given that you disclose you prefer a soft feel in your mattress I’d guide you to either our Origins Comfort 1000 or Artisan Luxury. The Origins range is our starter range of pocket sprung mattresses constructed with synthetic fillings. If there are no particular issues with overheating during sleep then this range would be fine. The Artisan Luxury is the softest mattress that we construct and retail; This will give a luxurious sink in sensation in to the top layer and also has the benefit of being constructed using 100% natural fillings that will give a really cool sleep surface; Ideal for anyone who does identify as a hot sleeper.

Please note that our advice regarding toppers is always to try the mattress for at least 4-6 weeks by itself to begin with as any new mattress will feel firmer to start with as the fillings and springs have never been compressed. If after this period you’re finding it too firm then look at adding a topper at this stage.

For naturally filled mattresses you should be looking at pairing it with something along the lines of wool or microfibres to emulate the sleep surface of the mattress. We would always advise against pillow top mattresses (Mattresses with in-built toppers) as you’re instantly limiting the lifespan of the mattress.
