Snapped base slats

Nick asked
18th October 2015

Hey guys,
I’m having an issue with my bed. It’s a sprung slatted king size bed with memory foam mattress. Very comfortable indeed. Yet I’m finding that the beech sprung slats have a horrible tendency to snap clean in half! I’m not a light gentleman but I’m by no means obese or anything yet, no matter how careful I am getting in and out of bed, they keep on snapping! Do you have any recommendations for replacement slats? Maybe a different type of wood? I don’t want to buy beech if they’re going to keep on breaking again and again. Or any advice to strengthening them? Thanks 🙂

Hi Nick,

Thank you for your question.  I am sorry to hear of your problems with your slats. Whilst I cannot recommend an alternative material for the slats, I would suggest that you try placing a thin (3-5mm) layer of MDF or plywood over that slats. This will then mean that the weight and movements are distributed over a larger surface area. This will also prevent any ridging occurring with your mattress as a result of it slipping between the slats, but may make the mattress feel slightly firmer.

All foam bases mattresses, whether hybrid foams like our Hybrid range, latex foam like our Fusion range or memory foam require a solid and consistent surface and which removes the issue of the slats causing dipping or damage to your mattress.  Just as the mattress conforms to your body, they also mould around the slats.  The slats can also nip and bite the mattress fabric over time causing tears and snags but by boarding over and using say a cheap duvet or blanket to cover the base you can avoid having your slats damage the mattress.
