Softening a Mattress Tension

Ann asked 25th September 2017

Does a mattress which has been stored in a warehouse take time to settle to the tension it is supposed to be sold as? I have purchased a Happy Beds Majestic 1000 pocket sprung mattress and it is rock hard to the point I cannot sleep on it. The sellers say it will soften with use about 6 weeks after purchase. Is this normal?

Hi Ann,

This is a very interesting question. The tension of a mattress is dictated by the spring unit which in turn should be selected based on your weight, rather than say firmness preference. We have detailed discussion on pocket springs and which spring gauge suits which weight of sleeper here.

Spring TensionWire diameterWeight Range
Soft1.2mmUpto 10 stone
Medium1.4mm10-16 stone
Firm1.6mm16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic1.9mm20 stone plus

It is the upholstery layer that will give you the true feel of the firmness or softness of a mattress. Upholstery will take a few weeks to settle and ‘bed in’. However, if it’s rock hard after 6 weeks it sounds like you have a mattress that has to firm an upholstery layer for your comfort preference. Maybe get back in touch with the seller and ask if there is an exchange offer to choose a mattress with softer upholstery layers for you.

We have our 60 day love it or return it guarantee for this reason. If the mattress we advise you on from our range is too firm, soft or not quite right we can exchange it for you.

We hope that helps. All the best in your search for the perfect mattress.
