Mary asked
9th August 2016

How long does it take for the mattress to become a bit softer and fit around the body. The one I tried in the shop much more comfortable than mine which arrived yesterday, it feels like lying on concrete

Hi Mary,

Without knowing the product you have bought and it’s construction in terms of upholstery, it is impossible to offer any form of advice.

Having said that, you should be aware that mattresses on display in shops could have been there for some time and may have been tried by, possibly, thousands of people and all that will have an effect on how that bed will feel when compared to a brand new product of the same specification.

In addition, it will also depend upon what spring tension you have opted for having regard for your body weight(s). As a rough guide if you are under 9 st you should opt for soft, 9 to 17 st should be medium and over 17 st should be firm.

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

If you fall in two different ranges, you ought to look at a split tension, although not all manufacturers offer these in their ranges.

Perhaps, you could ask the retailer how long the display model has been out and this may give you a rough indication, although in the meantime, it may be worth considering the application of a topper to soften the feel.

I trust that this helps,

Kind Regards Gary
