Superking mattress recommendation for an Ikea Base

Gill asked
24th June 2015

Hi, we are looking for a new super king mattress to go on our slatted IKEA base, I have noted your comments about covering this with 2 sheets of MDF.
I am 9st, very bad sleeper in that I like to turn often at night, prefer sleeping on my sides and occasionally my back [but my snoring doesn’t allow this often]. I get very hot at night too. My husband 14st likes to sleep face down and to lie very still. We both prefer very soft beds. I guess our budget is around £1k and would love a decent night sleep for us both.
Your advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Gill,

Thanks for your question.

At your body weight you are borderline between a Soft and Medium spring to get the right support. If you prefer a bit more give then choose the Soft spring. If you want something with a bit more support then choose the Medium spring tension. Your husband is very much a Medium spring tension.

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

If you are a hot sleeper then we would guide you to the Artisan range of products. These are traditional pocket sprung mattresses constructed with natural fillings; Those fillings provide a cool sleep surface so ideal for anyone who gets hot during sleep.

However, my concern here would be that even the starter model (Our Artisan 1500) is outside your budget.

You could have a look at something like our Origins Pocket 1500 instead and use a wool or microfibre topper to give a cool sleep surface. The Origins Pocket 1500 is very much a true medium feeling model providing a slight sink into the top layer but not too much. This will be fine for side sleepers as the only type you need to avoid is anything too firm.

We normally advise to place MDF, plywood or pegboard over a slatted base if the gaps are bigger than 3″. This is to protect from indentation and damage.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don’t hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
