Therapur mattress questions

Claire asked
25th March 2015

Hi I have a week ago taken delivery of a firm pocket sprung (1,000 springs, key filling is cotton) mattress from Dreams – it’s an Insignia Balmoral kingsize. It sits on a good quality sprung slatted base bedstead – I currently have no mattress topper. I opted for the firm tension as I have a bad back (slipped disc) but the mattress currently feels much firmer than I remember in the store. I am going to persevere with this mattress for at least another another week , but I am currently having to sleep with a cushion between my lower back and the mattress to avoid waking with dull back pain every hour or so – does this indicate the mattress is too firm?

I did experience back pain with my previous 10 year old coil-sprung mattress but not to this degree/frequency. Would adding a topper help?

I sleep on my back or my side and I weigh just over 10 stone. Dreams will exchange the mattress so that’s one solution – my second choice was a combination pocket sprung with a gel top (Therapur) but if I do change it, would I be better with another pocket sprung mattress and adding my own topper?

Thanks in advance >

Hi Claire,

Thank you for your enquiry. There was a time when the advice for people with bad backs was to opt for a firm mattress, unfortunately, this is now known to be incorrect.  What is required is the correct support with soft or medium comfort layers depending on your preference.  For your body weight, you are borderline between the soft and medium spring tensions so your height will probably help decide which spring tension would give you the correct support.

Spring TensionWire diameter (Gauge)Weight Range
Soft1.2mmBespoke Tension (Please Call)
Medium1.4mmUpto 16 stone
Firm1.6mm16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic1.9mm20 stone plus

The mattress you have purchased is likely to feel firmer than the one tried in the shop because the one in the shop could have been there for some time and have been laid on by a multitude of prospective purchasers, which will have a detrimental effect on the feel making it softer.  The Therapur mattress is a one-sided mattress and this could impact on it’s longevity.

Before agreeing upon any replacement, you should advise them of your body weight and back issues and seek their advice as to the most suitable mattress.  We would suggest that if you opt for another pocket sprung mattress that you seek clarification as the tension and as far as a topper is concerned, allow at least 14 days from first using the mattress as you may find a topper is unnecessary.
