TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Topper vs Protector

Lynn asked

Thanks so much for all the information, guys. My head is positively spinning but, to echo so many other posters, your website is a revelation. When you talk about ‘toppers’ am I right in assuming that you mean a fairly thick layer and not just a thin mattress protector, which is what I have at the moment?

And would a topper be necessary with all mattresses?

I apologise if you have already posted this but I have read so many posts I am finding it hard to remember all the facts. Thanks again, Lynn >

Hi Lynn.

The simple answer is yes!

A topper should be on all mattresses no matter how much you pay for the mattress.

To clarify this point and to take a lead from Savoir Beds – The best manufacturer the UK has, they now hold the record for producing the worlds most expensive bed – The Royal State at around £115,000 ($175,000).

As part of the build on this particular set they utilise the use of two additional toppers.

The first one is an under topper (Royal Under Topper) consisting of Soft Lambswool as the outer layer and filled with long, loose hand teased Horsetail.

The main topper (The Royal Topper) consisting of an outer layer of pure carded (combed) Cashmere, and filled with two layers of hand teased, curled Horsetail separated by a lambswool divide.

It is good practice for the topper you use to replicate or enhance the primary comfort layer on your mattress, but this is not a hard and fast rule and ultimately comes down to personal preference.

For example, if you have a memory foam mattress, this would be complemented with a memory foam topper – However, some people do not like the heat aspect associated with MF and so a more aerated topper such as Feather and Down may be more beneficial.

In fact the use of both would be ‘betterer’.

If you look at any of the high end bed sets eg: The Koh I Noor from Marshall and Stewart, The Hastens range, jensens range, Savoir Beds and so on, they are all sold with the topper for the simple reason it is completely and utterly best practice.

It does stand to reason that the primary layers on all mattresses will suffer over a period of time if you do not take measures to protect them.

Whilst doing this the more additional comfort you can add will of course be completely beneficial for many reasons – none more-so than preventing body sweat permeating the mattress.

Hope this answers your question Lynn.
