Vi-Spring at John Lewis feedback

Guys asked
11th January 2012

Hi John & Ryan Another big thank-you for the wealth of information on your website, it has been a great help to us and we hope it will all be very worthwhile………..after floundering around for months trying to decide what mattresses to buy and trying many, many mattresses in all the ‘big name’ bed shops we have just ordered one of your Artisan Naturals mattresses (for ourselves) and also an Origins Pocket Reflex 1000 (for our guest bed) and two Origins Comfort 100 mattresses (also for guest beds, mainly used by children)………can’t wait to receive them!

We are a bit concerned about our purchase as this is the first time we have purchased a mattress online without trying it first but we take confidence from your website and your guarantees. We had thought about purchasing the Origins Pocket 1500 for all our guest beds instead of the Reflex/comfort but after discussing it on the phone with Marie she advised us to stick with the Reflex and Comfort mattresses. We wanted to post a comment regarding some of our research and to find out your thoughts so that they can be shared with others……….in deciding whether to go for your Artisan Naturals bed we thought we would try out some VI-Spring beds, we went to our local John Lewis and although we found the VI-Spring mattresses extremely comfortable in the middle we were really, really disappointed as the edge support was terrible and it felt like you could roll out the bed if you were near the edge, there were 4 VI spring mattresses on display and all 4 were the same, one in particular was bulging really badly at the edges too………unfortunately I didn’t make a note of the mattress models. Have you had experience of feedback like this before regarding VI Spring mattresses and what are your thoughts on this?

Can you share information on the expected edge support from your Artisan Naturals range?

I wouldn’t have paid even £500 for any of these mattresses as the edge support was so bad (I’m only 10.5 stone and my husband is 12.5 stone). I did email VI Spring to let them know and they sent me a nice email back saying they had contacted John Lewis and that they would investigate further, they also said that perhaps the display models had been on the shop floor for some time (I would have thought their beds would have been sturdy enough to withstand the shop floor though – no other mattresses on display felt like this). Your thought would be much appreciated. Thanks Valerie & Donald .

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your question.

I have made mention somewhere else on this site about the edge support on Vi Spring mattresses. This is going to take a careful response to answer fully.

[UPDATE: March 2013: Hi again Valerie and Donald.

Since receiving your comment above we wrote to Vi Spring to ask them why they remove their edge support. We said that we experienced roll off whilst trying the mattress.

Their response was brief; “Thank you for your enquiry. To enable the sleeper to enjoy the comfort of our mattresses right up to the edge we remove the restraining rods before the mattress is upholstered.  However, if you wish the rods to be left in we can certainly do so, but your retailer must specify this on the order.”

We wrote to them again; “Thanks for the quick reply. I’ve received all sort of conflicting info about this side bar especially given my situation.

It’s great to know I can request it is left in. But this leaves me with another question!  What’s the purpose of removing this bar in your models, why do you do it if other makes leave it in?” “As it is an extra process and added cost I suppose that manufacturers of cheaper mattresses tend to leave them in.

As explained below we leave them in to enable the sleeper to enjoy the comfort of our mattresses right up to the edge.” What we glean from their response is that the comfort of the mattress you feel on the sleep surface will be the same at the edge. The downside is you will experience the roll off effect at the edge where there is no support.

I don’t fully endorse their response that manufacturers of cheaper mattresses leave them [restraining rods] in as a cost saving exercise. The benefit of inclusion in our mind far outweighs the reasons for removal.

In our Artisan range for example, not only do we attach the restraining rods, we also add a two row perimeter of a firmer gauge spring [An overall soft spring unit will have a medium spring gauge perimeter]. There is a theory that as calico encased springs are completely independent of each other, they will over time ‘find their own place’ within the mattress. The restraining rod edge of course hinders this to a very small degree, but again the upside of this inclusion prevents the unsightly bulging of the side panels.

This was an extremely interesting question.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don’t hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419. We are open Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm.

Kind Regards, John and Ryan.
