Vi Spring Herald or John Lewis Angora?

Rob asked
31st January 2013

Hi Chaps I’m a 15 stone 6 foot 1 male and sleep alone in a King Size Bed which, as my lower back is now telling me every morning is well past its sell by date. A nearby large Department Store is steering me towards the Vi Spring Herald range and the local John Lewis are assuring me that their Angora range is the one to go for. I only want a replacement Mattress and I am also being advised to go for a ‘Medium’ version rather than a “Firm” which my current Bed is (or was many years ago)!

I find it impossible to evaluate the alternatives (and recommendations which I suspect may be driven by profit maximisation!) and would appreciate any thoughts that you may have?

Hi Rob.

Thank you for your question.  Not too sure how much effort you want to put into this? I get the sense that you are completely and utterly frustrated by the whole process! Vi-Spring is a premium manufacturer and it is unlikely you can go wrong with them.  The John Lewis Angora is manufactured for JL by Harrison Spinks, who also manufacture for the likes of Feather and Black. I mention this because once you know the manufacturer you can do very close comparisons with different retailers.

The Herald Superb from Vi-Spring gives you a precise breakdown of upholstery (the Vi-Spring models in John lewis do not – quite wrong we think).  This is a firm in the upholstery.  Our comparison model to this mattress is the Artisan Bespoke.

The John Lewis Angora also has relatively little information on the upholstery ( what is the GSM of the fibres?) which prevents you from making a comparison purchase from Feather and Black or other retailers.

Artisan Naturals

When you were advised to go for a ‘Medium’ was that in the comfort layers or the spring tension?  Spring tension is based solely on an individuals body weight and this is what gives you the support you need.  The comfort layers are based on personal preference and sleeping habits, for example, we wouldn’t recommend anything to firm for side sleepers as this can cause pressure pains in the shoulders, hips and knees. The true medium of our Artisan range is the Artisan Naturals
