Mike asked

hi ryan/john, further to my recent e-mail, i have looked at some vi sprung beds, the lynmouth you use as a comparitor to the artisan bispoke has been superseeded by the Chatsworth. I have tried a bed in dreams called the Millbrook Countess, it is £1099 plus £159 in firm tension, both my wife and i thought it was very comfortable. what do you think?

Hi Mike.

Thank you for your enquiry.  The Chatsworth seems to be the updated version of The Lynmouth with the main difference being that The Lynmouth had a very generous description of the components contained and The Chatsworth currently relies on a description so vague it reads like a list of random farmyard words.

: Vi-Spring’s Chatsworth mattress provides a superb night’s rest, thanks to its pocketed springs and high-quality natural fillings.  Bamboo fibres are combined with Platinum Certified British wool, horsehair, cotton and luxurious cashmere and a layer containing 1720 supportive pocketed springs.  The top is upholstered in silky bamboo blend fabric, finished with wool tufts and 3 rows of hand side stitching.  They don’t say what the GSM (grams per square meter) of any of the components, as long as there is a small amount they can say it contains…That description tells you naff all and you are being asked to hand over three thousand quid for the privilege.  I can understand why they are cautious about detailing their components and I’m quite sure they will be able to tell you exactly what is inside if you ask.

BUT.

Vi-Spring partnered with John Lewis is a premium combination of quality and service.  If they are seen to be using the same superlative heavy, supposition tactics as many lesser brands (and that’s what we see), their reputation as being one of the top five premium UK manufacturers may start to decline.  I hope the salesperson in Dreams told you a bit more about The Countess Mattress than their website does.  Their description reads; Handcrafted divan set with 2000 individually hand-nested pocket springs (in a king size) providing excellent support. Topped with silk and wool for superb comfort.

Artisan Naturals mattress

I would most certainly put up for comparison our Artisan Naturals, the calico springs alone make it a better buy, never mind the stuff we pack it with. When you are paying this sort of money on a mattress you really do need to know what you are buying or more importantly know where your money is going. I would suggest you print off our specification for the Artisan models we offer and ask them point blank if they compare equally [or indeed less favourably – very unlikely] than the models you mention.

Spring tension should be based solely on your body weight(s).  This will ensure you have the correct support. If you prefer a firmer mattress, you should be looking to the upholstery layers to get the comfort level you find most suitable.
