Vi-spring signatory emperor bed too firm?

Alison asked

HI
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on beds..you seem to be well informed. I do have a question for you.
A few days ago we purchased a VI Spring Signatory emperor bed firm. It came from a house in London and looked in very very good condition. The bed is about 2001 and had regular use. My partner is 6ft 4″ and finds the bed really comfortable but after a couple of nights sleeping on it I am not happy. I like a firm bed but I do not seem to find this one very comfortable which should not be the case for a £20K bed.
There is a slight indent in the bed…so I have tried sleeping the opposite end of the bed…both not very good.
The bed base is also sprung and when you climb onto the bed it is lovely. I am super fussy about things like this and wondered if there was anything I could do to soften the bed and make it more comfortable. I read your article on toppers but did not want to go to the expense if they do not provide cushioning. I shall persevere with it for a few weeks but if it continues we may resell it…such a shame as the bed was a terrific purchase and we love the huge size 200 x 213!
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated

Hi Alison,

The only way to properly soften the feel of your mattress would be the application of a topper.

Notwithstanding the original price of your mattress, I would always advise against purchasing a used mattress over 12 months old because over time the upholstery will have settled and the original comfort layers will no longer feel as they were intended.

The problem is that this being a mattress that has been slept on for such a long period of time, those upholstery layers will have settled compared to when the mattress was new. Please see our article here on settlement and indentations.

Having said that, I hope that you will be able to resolve your issue with a topper.

Kind Regards Gary
