Sandra asked

Hi, I am looking to buy two Artisan Naturals single mattresses, I suffer from Asthma, are these available in an anti allergy fabric or should we buy allergenic mattress covers?

Also we currently have Vi-Spring firm edge bases that are 10 years old, will they be suitable for these mattresses?

Hi Sandra.

The dictionary definition of Hypoallergenic is ‘Relatively unlikely to cause an allergic reaction’.

It is our opinion that lack of general care and maintenance to the mattress (dust levels) will increase the triggers for asthma sufferers whether it be hypoallergenic covers or not.

I must say, in all the years we have been trading we have not experienced any complaint about allergy reactions from the fabrics on any of our mattresses.

I must admit that severe allergic reactions to textiles can of course be a major cause for concern and in cases like these I will be more than happy to assist and help in your choice.

The main content of the fabric on our Artisan range is Viscose (plant fibre) and quite unlikely to trigger a reaction.

Reading through my response I get the feeling that my comment seems a little blaze.

Absolutely not.

I get a little peeved when some descriptions unnecessarily make something out of nothing.

For example, polyester fibre in mattresses is naturally hypoallergenic and there should be no need to describe it as ‘hypoallergenic white fibre’ as if to imply it is somewhat better or more beneficial than white fibre or polyester.

As for your base, remove the mattress and run your hands over the top.

If you can feel springs protruding or an uneven surface then only you can assess if it requires replacement.

Personally, I think your current budget should be used towards the mattress and replace the base when funds allow.

I know general consensus is replace base with the mattress – but if you have a good base which Vi Spring is, then it seems rather extravagant and wasteful to replace if unnecessary.

Hope this helps if you require any further assistance please call the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards Gary
