TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

What is the Eve mattress actually like?

Thanks for such an informative and honest website! What a welcome goldmine of straight-talking info.

I’ve got a slatted bed base that has had two mattresses on it over the years, a pocket sprung Myers (which was good and lasted nearly a decade) and a foam IKEA (which wasn’t so good and gave me a few years of sub-standard comfort before giving up the ghost).

Now I’m keeping the bed base as it and the headboard was expensive, but I’m now starting the laborious task of finding a new mattress. I’m set on a memory foam mattress, and I think I’d prefer the all-over support compared to springs. Thanks to this blog I’m not concerned about it going on the slatted base, so thanks for that help!

I’ve noticed a couple of cool new brands online, one of which is Eve mattress. First off these look great, I can’t remember a better looking mattress to be honest, and they’ve got a 100 night home trial which sounds good to me. They’ve seem to have a lot of good reviews and press, and as well as having memory foam they’ve got organic and Natural Latex on the top of the mattress which sounds good for comfort and cooling.

My only concerns are that during my research on the Eve mattress I found a few comments and posts on forums that has put me off Eve mattress a little.

I struggled to actually find the quality of the memory foam they were using in the mattress, as besides words like “premium” and “quality” there wasn’t any info on their website about it. I found this forum thread which revealed a bit more about this though:

According to posts on the forum above, the Eve mattress memory foam density is 50kg/m2, so it doesn’t seem to really be high density or premium as they claim. Bit worrying.

As for the latex, which they claim on the website is ” All natural and Organic” it turns out its actually 60/40 synthetic/natural latex so isn’t really natural at all, and certainly isn’t organic.

Eve mattress are mentioning that the latex has a benefit for allergies, but I was of the understanding that it’s actually the natural elements of latex that can trigger allergies, so there seems to be some confusion at their end as to what they’re offering and what the benefits are. Not exactly reassuring!

The other stuff on that forum about the past company history of the Eve mattress founders, well, that has to be read to be believed. I’m not particularly bothered about this if I’m totally honest – if they’re selling a good mattress now then I’m buying it, but the signs kind of point to the fact that they’re not selling a good mattress at all, just one that appears good on the face of it with clever branding and a funky cover.

They do seem to have some good reviews for the Eve Mattress, but there is a thread on Money Saving Expert that also casts some doubt on the authenticity of these reviews as people are claiming the bad ones get deleted;

I am quite interested, but for this kind of price I do expect it to last 10 years and don’t want to make another wasteful purchase like the last ikea mattress we bought.

I’m wondering if you have you seen the Eve mattress and what do you make of it? How for example would this compare to one of your latex or memory mattresses?

Thanks in advance! x

Hi Elle,

Thanks for your question on the Eve mattress to which you raise some interesting points of question. Let’s see if we can help. The issue with a lot of mattress brands is that they don’t tell you exactly what’s in them. This causes real issues for bed buyers as it makes it impossible to compare or find out exactly how they will perform. Without knowing the GSM (grams per square meter), blends of fibres, densities of foam and springs/”>spring gauges you really are just guessing when buying a bed.

In our experience sleeping on the Eve classic there’s a medium-slow sink feel to the bed. Which when you heat up softens. Then there is medium support from the reflex support layer. It is an acquired taste, especially if you haven’t slept on memory foam before. So probably best to try one first somewhere. In our experience its harder to turn over on the Eve mattress than a Pocket Sprung model. This is maybe why you’re getting backache and feeling uncomfortable on it. As it may be keeping you held in an uncomfortable/unnatural sleeping position during the night.

Memory Foam Issues:

We do not recommend any memory foam mattresses because they tend to retain heat and are slow to return to shape meaning that when you move it is sometimes like climbing out of a hole. A 50kg density is very soft in terms of memory foam, meaning that you will sink quite quickly into it. It will provide a slow sink feeling and gets softer as it warms up. This is why memory foam is always heat retentive and not suitable for warmer sleepers.

Eve One Sided Mattress:

The Eve mattress is one-sided which bring more drawbacks than benefits in our experience. It means you can’t turn the mattress so you’re only ever using one side. This can lead to all the wear and tear occurring in one spot, ie undulations, dips and sags. This isn’t Eve’s fault per say. It is the construction method of all memory foam mattresses. They are all one-sided as flipping the mattress over would crush and irreparably damage the soft memory foam. So they can only ever be one-sided. This is the same for Casper, Emma, Made and other rolled boxed mattresses. They are all one sided.

Natural Latex vs Synthetic Latex:

As far as the Eve mattress is concerned, I would be wary of purchasing anything that is alleged to be 100% natural and is actually a 60/40% split, because if they are not accurate with this statement, what else are they not being accurate with. We do use 100% Natural Latex in all of our Fusion range. Our Fusion range are two-sided and come with a removable topper to increase comfort but also allow you to replace the topper after a number of years if need be. Leaving the core mattress practically perfect underneath. It’s a way of helping extend the longevity of your mattress and provide a better construction method.

Eve Reviews:

Obviously, we can’t confirm some of the negative reviews of Eve products dipping and failing as we haven’t seen the potential defective mattresses. In terms of the heat issue, people mention frequently this is true of all-foam mattresses. You will be far warmer than in a Natural Fibre mattress. In terms of the longevity of boxed mattresses like Eve, the jury is out as we are only getting up to the point where they may be reaching the end o their life ie after 3-5 years mainly due to the fact they are one-sided.

Alternatives to Eve Mattresses:

Our Alternatives at around a similar Price point would be our Fusion 3 or Artisan Naturals (a non-foam Natural Fibre and Calico Encased Pocket Spring Mattress). Both of which are two sided and turnable. Both are 100% Natural and far more breathable than other synthetic foams. Have a look at them below.

Above is the Artisan Naturals available in 3 Spring tensions depending on your bodyweight and a true 2-sided mattress.

Above the Fusion 3 Solid Core 100% Natural Latex Model. 2-sided and with a removable changeable Latex topper for extra comfort.

Please view the products on the Fusion products on our site and call our office on 0161 437 4419 for more specific advice and with your body weights as to the suitability of one of these products for you.

All the best
