Hi Steve,

Thank you for your enquiry on our website.  We would recommend 3 to 5mm thick of either MDF or Plywood to board over slats that have a space greater than 3 “.  This is because the springs in a pocket sprung mattress will settle in the gaps causing ridging.  This means you will not get the correct support and over time your mattress will be damaged.  If the gap is less than 3” then an old blanket or duvet will help cushion the mattress and prevent indentation from the slats.  We do not recommend slatted bases for foam mattresses.

MDF and Plywood are available at most DIY stores, there is no reason you need an expensive piece from timber merchant.

If you would like to discuss this or anything else call our friendly team on 0161 250 9746.  Our office hours are 8 am – 8 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am – 4 pm Saturday and Sunday.
