Hi, We have been researching buying a special bed, we have been looking at the Savoir no 4 and also the Hastens Luxuria, is there a real difference between the two (prices are similar), is it worth spending this kind of money?

best regards.

Hi There,

Thank you for your question.

From what I see, and I am unaware of the retail prices you have been quoted there are two main differences between Savoir and Hastens. These being UK and Swedish manufactured. I am also not privy to any ‘precise’ specifications as to the overall construction of these two mattresses.

All I know is that many of the natural components contained in these mattresses are / may be imported from abroad – horsehair is mainly imported from China / wool from various countries – New Zealand being a favourite for price and quantity and so on. Saying this though, there are only a handful of specialist suppliers to the bedding industry that can offer a manufacturer a complete range of natural fibres sourced from around the world! These suppliers are at the very top of the game and so confidence in actual component(s) can be taken for granted.

Your decision will be who is best prepared to assemble the components and offer a finish to a standard that warrants this level of retail price. Incidentally, I am under the impression that Savoir will be tailor making the mattress to suit your each and every requirement (not particularly sure if Hastens do this).

Your final question was ‘Is it worth spending this kind of money?

I personally could not justify it but again, I would acknowledge the fact that a huge chunk of the retail price will be going towards advertising / mark up / agents commision and so on.The very things that I would not be contributing to When you spend this kind of money on a mattress you are looking at a 25 year lifespan under a repair or replace warranty. Your math should be working out whether it be best to replace every five years by spending a fifth of the retail price or blow the whole lot in one go – very difficult.

How much to spend on a double mattress? What can I expect for my money?
Under £500Will not get you much at best a 13.5 gauge open coil/cage sprung with a thin polyester layer or a solid foam mattress.
£500Entry level spunbond springs with some form of synthetic upholstery. Usually one sided mattresses.
£750The beginnings of a basic pocket springs unit with 800 – 1000 count. No substantial amount of filling other than foams and synthetic materials. Two sided models.
£1000Should get you away from most low ranges and into the mid-range pocket spring models.
£1250Should get you a decent pocket sprung mattress with some Natural Fibre content.
£1500Should get you many manufacturers mid-range models with Natural Fibres
£1500-£2000Should get you a Hand Made primarily Natural Fibre Quality Mattress
£2000+You should expect 100% Natural Fibres and Traditional Hand Made Construction Method.
£5000+A Bespoke Hand Made Sleep System, High-end Spring Units & Featuring the Worlds Most Luxurious Natural Fibres.

I do take a more than keen interest in handmade beds at this level of craftsmanship and can offer quite similar products at a vastly reduced price. The Artisan range is our luxury range of naturals fibre pocket sprung mattresses. There are seven different models in this range, the Artisan Luxury is the softest and the Artisan Bespoke is the firmest. The Artisan Naturals is described as the ‘true medium’ of the Artisan range. A King size Naturals mattress will cost you £1235.00 at John Ryan By Design. All of the mattresses in the Artisan range can be paired with either a soft, medium or firm spring tension. The correct spring tension is determined by your body weight.
