Which? recommended mattress by Sealy

Ann asked

Hi, I am 12 1/2 stone and losing weight and my hubbie about 11 stone. We are both about 5 foot 10. I am awaiting delivery of a sealy teramo zip and link 6 foot wide mattress. I Chose this as it was so highly rated by Which and felt just right in the shop. I hate the look of divans so plan on getting a pine frame locally made but even having read your posts I’m not sure re best slat options. I have chronic shoulder problems and hate my memory foam mattress from john Lewis as it’s been so hot! Our current base has 8 inch solid slats at least 4 inches apart. That is a 5 foot bed so going to heaven anyway ! Thanks. Ann

Hi Ann,

Thanks for your question.

The optimum gap between wooden slats if 5-6cm, any greater will result in your mattress depressing into spaces between the slats. If you have your frame made with the slats with a gap under 6cm, we would still recommend that you place some form of barrier between the mattress and the slats to avoid the mattress becoming ridged on the reverse side.

This barrier could take the form of an old duvet or even a thick blanket. Please be aware that solid slats will make any mattress feel firmer than sprung slats and the mattress may feel quite different if it was tried on a divan base in the shop, although it is entirely a personal choice whether to go for sprung or solid slats.

If you require any assistance with our products please give the office a call on 0161 437 4419

Kind regards Mike.
