Your opinion please on Silentnight Refresh mattress

Anna asked
19th April 2012

Hi, I am looking for a new double mattress and liked the Silent Night Refresh bed but after reading your advice was thinking that this may be wasted money – or money better spent on a different mattress. I like a firm mattress and one where it wont affect me when my parter tosses and turns all night on the other side of the bed…Any suggestions please for a budget of around £600?

Thanks very much. .

Hi Anna,

Thanks for your question.

As you may know The Silentnight Refresh (Body Healthy Range) is made solely for Bensons. The Silentnight Neptune is the nearest equivalent. The Neptune is 34cm deep the Refresh is 28cm deep.

As to which mattress is best is personal preference. Only you can decide which mattress provides your body with the right level of support and comfort. Both mattresses are made to the same high quality standards and undergo exactly the same durability tests. The first question I would be inclined to ask is where the 6cm of difference comes in? Looking at the 2 descriptions side by side should give me the answer:

1.) BFB – Silentnight Refresh [£499 Double – 20/4/12] [Official description] Refresh Double Size Mattress features a unique 1550 Two Layer Spring system is made from 750 Miracoils Springs and 800 Mini Pockets Springs, which don’t wobble, collapse or bulge whilst giving you support across the whole surface. The breathable airlfow border combined with the Ecomemory Fibre gives pressure relieving benefits of memory foam without any overheating problems. Silentnight Ecobreathe Fibre Clean, safe and hypoallergenic, containing no chemicals, odours or Volatile Organic Compounds. Breathable fibres are scientifically proven to stay cooler for comfortable and healthy sleep. Planet Friendly polyester fibre made from 50% recycled PET bottles makes the mattress 100% recyclable. Purotex Probiotics keeps the mattress naturally fresh, healthy and dust-mite free.

2.) Online Store: Silentnight Neptune £359 Double – 20/4/12] [Official Description] Intelligent Miracoil® springs with an extra cushioning layer to provide more targeted support for your curves and total body relaxation. Firmness for your hips, softness for your shoulders and extra protection for your lower back. Unique two layer spring combination – 750 Intelligent zoned Miracoil® springs give comfort, support and pressure relief for all shapes and sizes. 1350 individual pocket springs for luxurious comfort. With Purotex® is the only solution, which is 100% natural. The friendly bacteria, which reduces mould and moisture, keeps dust-mites at bay and reduces allergens for a drier, fresher, healthier mattress throughout Cirrus Airflow stops you overheating for deep, healthy sleep. Pressure relief for a more peaceful night’s sleep. No roll off, no roll together. Hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant. Easy Care – No need to turn simply rotate. Firmness rating: Firm.

Looking at the two side by side tells you instantly that The Neptune at £140 less gives you possibly more mattress for your money.

However, what is so blatantly missing on the Neptune is any kind of description of what the fillings actually are! They state that it includes an EXTRA cushioning layer – but extra to what? Without this information it is impossible for you to do a thorough comparison to see which mattress has more upholstery. In fairness, these are after all starter range mattresses and all you could possibly expect for the upholstery is polyester in one form or another. But that does not mean you should not be told or informed what the upholstery layers actually consist of – Bad form.

Incidentally, and of benefit to all readers, you will have noticed that The BFB Refresh has a component called “EcoMemory Fibre” This is a relatively new product (last nine months or so) produced by a premium converter and was hailed as the alternative to Memory Foam. This is quite a good product for lower end mattresses, far superior to spun polyester as a mattress component but it does come in at a price !! In instances like this you really do have to find out the weight of this component by GSM (Grams per Square Metre) 800gsm would be acceptable if coupled with polyester. 1000gsm acceptable as a standalone.

I have an inkling that it would not be anywhere near this though. This is not an exclusive product to Silentnight and associated companies. It is found on many other products under the name Memory Fibre or intelligent Fibre [i-Fibre] . The component referred to as EcoBreath is a substitute for spun polyester hailed as being a greener version of such. Bear in mind though that these products are from a rival converter to British Vita – one of the major producers of Memory Foam and spun polyester products.

Going back to your question Anna; The Neptune at £359 may be a better alternative, and the lack of any worthwhile upholstery can be supplemented by a good quality topper etc.

Please note that if you suffer from disturbance from the other person then you might be best with a Zip and Link pocket sprung mattress from our Origins range. Given your preference for a firmer feel I’d guide you to our Origins Pocket Reflex 1000. It has a medium spring tension as standard with a firmer top upholstery and while it is firmer in that upholstery we get a lot of feedback that it’s very comfortable at the same time.
