Zip and link – suitable bed base

Caroline asked

Hi, we have bought a holiday let complete with furniture. There are twin slatted beds in one of the rooms and I wondered about using a zip and link mattress with them to give greater flexibility. The beds can sit side by side as the headboards don’t stick out but there is a lip of about 2cm high on the sides of the beds to hold the mattress in place, can these beds still be used with a zip and link mattress, wouldn’t the lip be felt through the mattress? If we used a mattress topper but underneath the mattress to lift the mattress up would that help to raise the mattresses up?, thanks

Hi Caroline,

Thank you for your enquiry.

Zip and link mattresses are made so that when zipped together they form a one piece mattress, the fact that you have a recess on your bases of around 2cm does cause a problem, because it is not only the recess but the thickness of the side rail that needs to be addressed. Although as you suggest, you may be able to fill the recess, the two side rails next to each other when the beds are pushed together are likely to cause a ridge in the centre of the mattresses where the zip is. If you do as you suggest and use a topper to fill the recess, this will over time or with certain body weights depress and not provide an even surface for both mattress to sit and and place strain on the zip.

Our zip and links are usually used with either a divan base, which is also split top to toe or a bed frame that has a recess sufficient to hold both mattresses. When advising on the most appropriate mattresses/bed for B&Bs or Guesthouses, we normally recommend the Origins Pocket Reflex 1000 and if, on occasions a one piece is required or sometimes two singles, we would advise purchasing the zip and link with the divan base. This mattress is suitable for a wide range of body weights, making it the ideal product for accommodation.

Whilst we appreciate that you may not wish to have the additional expense of buying bases with your mattresses, as there are some there already, in the long term, it is likely to turn out to be a sound investment. If you opt to buy two single mattresses instead and not bring the beds together, we would recommend that you place some form of barrier, usually thin (3-5mm) MDF, over the slats to provide the mattresses with a uniform surface upon which to sit and prevent ridging occurring as a result of the mattresses dipping into the gaps between the slats.

We trust that the above is of assistance to you, but if you would like to discuss your requirements in more details, please call our office on 0161 437 4419, kind regards.
