Slatted base and pocket sprung mattress

Eileen asked
23rd March 2019

Hi. I need a new mattress (mine is 11 years old and uncomfortable). Do I need a new bed too? I have a bed with a slatted base and I chose it for its looks! So it could be a rubbish bed, I don\’t really know! Thanks.

Hi Eileen,

Thank you for your enquiry.

If the space between the slats on your bed base is greater than 3 inches we would recommend boarding over the slats with MDF or Plywood. This gives the mattress a uniform surface and will stop the springs from settling into the gaps which can damage a mattress.

If the space between your slats is less than 3 inches we would just recommend an old or cheap duvet as a barrier between the slats and the mattress to prevent indentations from the slats in your mattress.

Our general advice when it comes to bases is that if there is nothing wrong with your current base then there is no need to purchase a new one when buying a new mattress.

If you can contact the office on 0161 437 4419 to provide details of your weight, sleeping habits and preference in feel we will be happy to point out some suitable mattress choices from our ranges.

Kind Regards
Michaela
