TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Best mattress after back operation.

Christine Burgess asked
30th June 2016

I had a back operation a few years ago. I’m beginning to have twinges again when I wake up in the morning. My current mattress is cheap and saggy.
I have a slatted base on an old iron bed with brass knobs. What do you suggest. It’s 4’6″ wide.
I weigh 175 lbs and am 5’7″ tall, aged 64 female.

Hi Christine,

previous medical advice for people who suffer from back pain or have undergone operations on their backs was to opt for a firmer mattress. This advice is now being contradicted with the Institute of Chiropractors confirming that what should be sought was support from a spring tension appropriate for the body weight and comfort being provided by the upholstery layers.

I note that you have a slatted bed and I would always advocate placing some form of barrier between the mattress and the slats, usually in the form of thin (3-5mm) MDF sheeting. This will provide the mattress with a uniform surface upon which to sit and prevent ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats.

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

At your height and body weight, you are a medium spring tension. This needs to be paired with either a soft or a medium in comfort layered mattress to enable you to sink into the upper layer (the amount would be based on your sleeping habits) I would suggest taking a look at the Origins Pocket 1500 or the Origins Comfort 1000 if you are looking for synthetic fibres or the Artisan Naturals and the Artisan Luxury if you are looking for a natural fibre mattress.
