Best mattress for hip bursitis to stay cool and comfortable at night

Carol Ashley asked
28th December 2020

Can you please offer some guidance regarding a mattress that doesn’t make me feel hot and aids hip bursitis.

I’m looking for a King Size mattress, husband and I are both side sleepers. He’s 13 stone and I’m 12 stone.

Due to BC and RA medication, I can get warm overnight.

Firm edge but believe a medium firmness mattress would be appropriate?. My goal is to get a good night’s sleep. 🙂

Hi Carol,

Sorry to hear you’re struggling with hip bursitis. It can be a really painful condition but the good news is we have helped a number of sleepers find a suitable mattress for this condition. It’s about choosing the right mattress components to accomodate your condition rather than battle against it.

To help reduce heat build up and therefore reduce discomfort it is essential you look for as natural a mattress as possible. This is because natural fibres help wick away moisture and regulate temperatures far more effectively than synthetic mattresses. You’re also going to need a mattress that is soft enough to allow you to both sink slightly as side sleepers.
By choosing upholstery that is more forgiving it will reduce the pressure and help to reduce nighttime discomfort from arthritis. However, we need to look at the support unit first.

Pocket Spring Tensions:
The first thing to get right is choosing the correct spring tension. This is where 99% of people go wrong in buying a new mattress. They pick the spring tension believing it relates to comfort which it doesn’t. It is based on your bodyweight. At your weights you need a 1.4 medium gauge pocket spring.

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

Mattress Upholstery for Arthritis:
The next step is to choose mattress upholstery which is both supportive and forgiving. Especially with arthritis. You want to avoid any firm or overly supportive mattresses at all costs. You ideally need a mix of high loft and medium feel fibres that will allow hips and shoulders to sink neatly into the top comfort layer of the mattress.

You also want to avoid firm foams, memory foam and very firm layers. Opting more for wool, horsehair. cotton and bamboo layers.

We would recommend you have a look at our Artisan Bespoke 004 in a medium spring tension Carol.
It has a medium feel in the natural upholstery with a forgiving top layer. Great for pressure points. The 1600 individual pocket springs allow restless sleepers to move quickly, easily and effortlessly.

Often this helps reduce the amount of fidgeting when coupled with the progressive comfort layers of this mattress. Available in 3 different spring tensions depending on your bodyweight(s).
