Boarding over sprung slatted base with Aluminium
Hi I am going to be boarding over my sprung slatted base and read all the information here on the matter. I do have some questions however. I am concerned that boarding over the slats whilst being very beneficial in providing a uniform base for the mattress will also significantly hamper ventilation potentially leading to a smelly mattress or mould growth between the mattress and the bed. I have read in numerous places about mattresses being used on the floor or on solid platform beds having mould issues. I am aware that your mattresses do have ventilation vents along the sides but surely this alone would not be sufficient? I was hoping to go for pegboard as at least there is some breathability as opposed to plain mdf. I then came across these perforated steel or aluminium sheets which offer far greater ventilation. What do you think of this as an option? An example can be seen below:

The drawbacks are the cost is higher than pegboard and I may have to allow for expansion also.
Also if I was to opt to forgo boarding over the slats, would this be particularly detrimental to the mattress? I am considering the Artisan Bespoke in double…My bedstead comprises of sprung slats approximately 6cm wide and spaced at between 5 and 6cm apart. There are 2 sets of slats spanning from outer edge of frame to central support beam so essentially there are seperate sprung slats for each sleeping position. My current mattress is one sided, and the weight is sufficient to flatten the slats completely…. I do however see the ridging effect present on the under side of the mattress….
In truth I am leaning towards replacing the sprung slats with standard slats and would be hoping to use the perforated aluminium sheets on top.

It sounds like you have really been doing your research!
I don’t see any reason why boarding over the slats with solid MDF vs perforated/peg board would be detrimental to the mattress. A lot of divan based sold in the UK are defined as Platform Top. This means that the mattress is sat on a solid surface and this doesn’t cause any issue with damp or mould.
The feedback we get from customers with sprung slats is that they can contribute to the centre of the mattress dipping over time as it creates an uneven platform for the mattress to sit on.
If you were to forgo boarding over the slats and replace them with flat slats then we usually recommend that you put a thick blanket of old duvet over the slats to cushion the underside of the mattress and protect it from any damage from the slats.
